An electrostatic chuck table for holding a workpiece includes: a plate-shaped base transmittable with respect to a laser beam having a predetermined wavelength allowing the laser beam to be transmitted through the workpiece, the plate-shaped base having a first surface and a second surface opposite the first surface; an electrostatic attraction electrode assembly transmittable with respect to the laser beam having the predetermined wavelength, the electrostatic attraction electrode assembly being formed on the first surface of the base; and a resin layer transmittable with respect to the laser beam having the predetermined wavelength, the resin layer covering the electrode assembly and providing a holding surface for holding the workpiece thereon. The electrostatic chuck table is used in forming a modified layer within the workpiece held on the holding surface with the laser beam that is applied to the workpiece from the side of the second surface of the base.

A grinding apparatus for grinding a wafer stored in a cassette composed of a container for storing the wafer and a lid for enclosing the container. The grinding apparatus includes a cassette table for placing the cassette thereon, a lid removing unit for removing the lid from the cassette placed on the cassette table and leaving only the container on the cassette table, a chuck table for holding the wafer under suction, a chuck table moving unit for moving the chuck table to a grinding area, a grinding unit provided in the grinding area, the grinding unit having a grinding wheel for grinding the wafer held on the chuck table, a grinding water supplying unit for supplying a grinding water to abrasive members of the grinding wheel, and a waste water collecting unit for collecting waste water generated in grinding the wafer by operating the grinding unit.

A preference learning apparatus includes a content attribute information database, action information database, time information correlation table, area information correlation table, user's preference information database, user action detection section, and preference information management section. The preference information management section generates preference analysis data using time zone information, area name, attribute and its weight, and attribute value related to a user's preference and updates the weight contained in preference information in the user's preference information database, which is specified by time zone information, area name, attribute/attribute value, and user ID, with the weight contained in the generated preference analysis data. Position data and spot data of explanation contents are stored in a spot data database in a center. Preference data of the individual users are stored in a preference data database. Group's preference data of user groups are stored in group's preference data database in the center. When the center extracts each user's present time and present position from data received from the user, it selects spot data on the basis of the user's resent time and present position and also preference data and user group's preference data obtained with user ID from the preference data database and the user group's preference data database, and instructs transmission of the selected spot data to the pertinent user's portable data terminal. Thus, it is possible to provide apt data to users even when the users take action patterns different from a usual action pattern.
