An exhaust system for a marine outboard drive emits engine exhaust gases to the atmosphere at a point proximate to the water surface of the body of water in which the outboard drive is operated. An upper cowling of the outboard drive houses an engine. A drive shaft housing depends from the lower tray of the cowling and terminates at an intermediate housing. The intermediate housing connects a lower propulsion unit to the drive shaft housing. The exhaust system communicates with an exhaust manifold of the engine and extends downwardly through the drive shaft housing. An expansion chamber of the exhaust system is formed principally within the intermediate housing, below the drive shaft housing and above the propulsion device supported by the lower propulsion unit. An exhaust vent communicates with the expansion chamber and emits engine exhaust gases at a point behind the outboard drive near the lower end of the drive shaft housing.

Outboard drive exhaust system

A number of embodiments of outboard motors incorporating liquid storage tanks within the protective cowling and wherein the cowling includes a removable cowling portion that cooperates with the fill neck for closing the fill neck when the removable cowling portion is in place. In some embodiments, the fill neck is accessible by a pivoted closure member which seals the fill neck and which defines an air inlet opening to the cowling. In other embodiments, the tank has a bellows-type expandable fill neck that pops up when the fill neck is accessed.

Storage structure of liquid tank for marine propulsion

Several embodiments of outboard motor fuel feed systems wherein a position responsive valve is interposed between a remotely positioned fuel tank and the engine charge former for precluding the inadvertent flow of fuel to the charge former when the outboard motor is tilted up. In one embodiment, the valve is a gravity responsive valve and in another embodiment, the valve is mechanically operated. In a third embodiment, a device is provided for relieving the pressure in the conduit between the position responsive valve and the fuel tank when the outboard motor is again tilted down to its normal running position.
