A compound represented by the following general formula (1) is provided. Liquid crystal compositions comprising at least two components wherein the first component is at least one selected from propiolonitrile derivatives containing 2-4 rings and the second component is at least one selected from the liquid crystalline compounds containing 2-4 rings and a saturated or unsaturated hydrocarbon group of up to 10 carbons. The propiolonitrile derivatives of the first component are those wherein each ring is trans-1,4-cyclohexylene, 1,4-phenylene, 2,6-dioxan-1,4-diyl or 2,6-pyrimidine-1,4-diyl, each bridge between the rings is ethylene, carbonyloxy or covalent bond and the terminal group at one end is hydrocarbon group of up to 10 carbons which may contain at least one ether bond in the chain.

Disclosed are (A) a liquid crystalline compound of the general formula: ##STR1## wherein X.sub.1 stands for a hydrogen atom, cyano group, a halogen atom, or an alkyl group with 1-20 carbon atoms, and one or more methylene groups in the alkyl group may be replaced by --CH.dbd.CH--, --.tbd.C--, or oxygen atoms and one or more hydrogen atoms may be substituted by halogen atoms; X.sub.2 stands for a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group with 1-10 carbon atoms, or a substituent of --(A.sub.4 --Z.sub.4).sub.s --A.sub.6 --X.sub.3 ; l, m, n and s each stands for an integer of 0 or 1, and p, and q each stands for an integer of 0-5; X.sub.3 for an alkyl group with 1-10 carbon atoms; Z.sub.1 -Z.sub.4 each independently stands for a covalent bond or an alkylene group with 1-5 carbon atoms, and one or more methylene groups in the alkylene group may be replaced by --CH.dbd.CH--, --C.tbd.C--, or an oxygen atom and one or more hydrogen atoms i the alkylene group may be substituted by halogen atoms; the ring A.sub.1 -A.sub.6 each independently stands for a 1,4-phenylene, a 1,4-cyclohexenylene, or a trans-1,4-cyclohexylene, and the carbon atoms in the ring may be replaced by nitrogen atoms or oxygen atoms and the hydrogen atoms in the ring may be substituted by halogen atoms or cyano groups; and B.sub.1 and B.sub.2 each independently stands for --CH.dbd.CH-- or --C.tbd.C--, with the proviso that both of B.sub.1 and B.sub.2 should not be --CH.dbd.CH-- at the same time, (B) a liquid crys-line composition comprising at least one liquid crystalline compound of the general formula (1), and (C) a liquid crystal display element wherein the composition (B) is used. The liquid crystalline compounds of the present invention are distinguished by their characteristics of steep threshold voltage, an adequate magnitude of values in optical or dielectric anisotropy, an extremely high ratio of elastic constants and low viscosity in addition to good compatibility with other liquid crystalline compounds.

A liquid crystal composition is disclosed which contains, as the first component, at least one compound expressed by the formula (I-a) or (I-b) and contains, as the second component, at least one compound expressed by any one of the formulas (II-a) to (II-g), each of the formulas being recited in the specification. According to the present invention, a liquid crystal composition which is particularly excellent in compatibility in low temperatures, and has a suitably large .DELTA.n and a small V.sub.th can be provided while satisfying several characteristics required for liquid crystal compositions for AM-LCD.

Liquid crystal composition and liquid crystal display element

A novel liquid crystalline compound having a low viscosity and a high elastic constant ratio and at the same time, a superior compatibility with other known liquid crystalline compounds, and a liquid crystal composition and a liquid crystal display element containing the novel compound, are provided. The compound is an alkenylcyclohexane derivative expressed by the formula (1): ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 represent a linear or branched alkyl group of 1 to 15 carbon atoms or alkenyl group of 2 to 15 carbon atoms; at least one of R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 represents an alkenyl group; in these groups, one or more non-adjacent CH.sub.2 groups may be replaced by oxygen atom, sulfur atom or --C.tbd.C-- group; ring A.sup.1, ring A.sup.2 and ring A.sup.3 each independently represent 1,4-cyclohexylene group wherein one or more CH.sub.2 groups on the ring may be replaced by oxygen atom or sulfur atom, or 1,4-phenylene group wherein one or more CH groups on the ring may be replaced by nitrogen atom; Z.sup.1 and Z.sup.2 each independently represent --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 --, --CH.sub.2 O--, --OCH.sub.2 --, --CH.dbd.CH--, --C.tbd.C-- or single bond; Z.sup.3 represents --(CH.sub.2).sub.4 --, --CH.dbd.CH--(CH.sub.2).sub.2 --, --CH.sub.2 --CH.dbd.CH--CH.sub.2 -- or --(CH.sub.2).sub.2 --CH.dbd.CH--; and m, n and i each independently represent 0 or 1.
