An object of the present invention is to provide an aqueous poly(meth)acrylic acid (salt) solution having high dispersibility of inorganic substances and demonstrating dispersibility having sufficient stability over time, and a process for preparing the same. The present invention relates to an aqueous poly(meth)acrylic acid (salt) solution comprising a poly(meth)acrylic acid (salt) having a weight average molecular weight of 1000 to 10000 polymerized in the presence of a phosphorus compound containing hypophosphorous acid (salt), wherein the phosphorus compound contains 0 to 0.3% by mass of a phosphorous acid (salt) based on 100% by mass of the phosphorus compound, and the aqueous poly(meth)acrylic acid (salt) solution contains 0 to 10000 ppm of an inorganic anion and a process for the preparation thereof.

An aqueous solution containing a poly(meth)acrylic acid-based polymer which shows excellent dispersibility for inorganic substances, satisfactory long-term dispersibility, and a favorable color is provided. The aqueous solution of the present invention is an aqueous solution comprising a poly(meth)acrylic acid-based polymer, the poly(meth)acrylic acid-based polymer including carboxyl groups, wherein in 100 mol % of the carboxyl groups, 30 to 85 mol % of the carboxyl groups are in an alkali metal salt form of the carboxyl groups, and 15 to 70 mol % of the carboxyl groups are in an acid form of the carboxyl groups, the poly(meth)acrylic acid-based polymer containing a phosphorus-containing group, the poly(meth)acrylic acid-based polymer having a weight average molecular weight of 2000 to 9000, the aqueous poly(meth)acrylic acid-based polymer solution having a concentration of inorganic anions, each including a sulfur or phosphorus atom, of 1000 to 10000 ppm relative to the aqueous poly(meth)acrylic acid-based polymer solution.

The present invention is a powder of a vinylpyrrolidone polymer having a K value of smaller than 50, characterized in that a content of particles having a particle diameter of 106 &#x3bc;m or smaller is 10% by mass or less and a content of particles having a particle diameter of greater than 1,000 &#x3bc;m is 5% by mass or lower. A process for production of a powder of a vinylpyrrolidone polymer according to the present invention is characterized in that a vinylpyrrolidone polymer having a K value of smaller than 50 is formed into a solution having a concentration from 30% to 70% by mass, and the solution is dried by using a hot surface adhesion-type dryer, followed by pulverization so that a content of particles having a particle diameter of 106 &#x3bc;m or smaller is 10% by mass or lower and a content of particles having a particle diameter of greater than 1,000 &#x3bc;m is 5% by mass or lower. Thus, there is provided a powder of a vinylpyrrolidone polymer, which has excellent solubility in spite of having a low K value determined by a Fikentscher method and can be made into solution with favorable handleability without dust rising, and a process for production of the same.

The present invention relates to the hydrophilic graft polymer obtained by graft polymerization of monomer component containing unsaturated monocarboxylic acid onto polyalkylene oxide, wherein mole ratio of side chain moiety derived from the unsaturated monocarboxylic acid is more than 90% by mole relative to total side chain, and residual amount of unsaturated monocarboxylic acid is less than 200 ppm by mass relative to the total mass of said hydrophilic graft polymer.

A process for producing an alkylene sulfide, which comprises the step of subjecting a mercaptoalkanol to an intramolecular dehydration reaction in the presence of an acidic dehydration catalyst, to produce the alkylene sulfide, in which the intramolecular dehydration reaction is conducted under at least one conditions of (1) to (3). (1) The intramolecular dehydration reaction is conducted in at least one solvent selected from the group consisting of compounds having an amide group N-substituted with a hydrocarbon group having from 1 to 6 carbon atoms, compounds having an unsubstituted amide group, compounds having a ureylene group N-substituted with a hydrocarbon group having from 1 to 6 carbon atoms, and compounds having an unsubstituted ureylene group. (2) The intramolecular dehydration reaction is conducted in a solvent under such temperature and pressure conditions that the reaction temperature T (.degree.C.) and the boiling point tb (.degree.C.) of the solvent at the reaction pressure satisfy equation (tb-30).ltoreq.T.ltoreq.tb. (3) The intramolecular dehydration reaction is conducted in a solvent in the presence of a hydrocarbon having a boiling point at ordinary pressure of from 30.degree. C. to 180.degree. C. When the hydrocarbon has from 6 to 9 carbon atoms, the above-described effects are enhanced further. When the concentration of the hydrocarbon in the reaction mixture is maintained in the range of from 0.1 to 10% by weight, the above-described effects are enhanced even more.
