A separator for alkaline batteries, which is used for the purpose of separating a positive electrode active material and a negative electrode active material from each other, and holding an electrolyte solution, and which is obtained by stacking and integrating a fiber layer A that has a density of 0.52-0.62 g/cmand a thickness of 25-35 μm and a fiber layer B that has a density of 0.40-0.50 g/cmand a thickness of 25-35 μm, so that the entirety of the separator has a density of 0.45-0.57 g/cmand a thickness of 50-70 μm.

A separator for an electric double-layer capacitor is provided having a double-layer structure made of a fibrous layer A obtained by papermaking using a Fourdrinier net or a tanmo net, and a fibrous layer B obtained by papermaking using a cylinder net. The fibrous layer A is a layer that is refined until a CSF value decreases once to 0 ml (lower limit), and further refined until it turns to rise to 10 to 600 ml, the fibrous layer B is a layer that is refined until a CSF value of 700 to 0 ml, and the fibrous layer A and the fibrous layer B contain 70% by mass or more refinable, regenerated cellulose fibers. The density of the entire double-layer structure is 0.25 to 0.65 g/cm, and the thickness of the same is 10 to 150 &#x3bc;m. This allows provision of a separator for an electric double-layer capacitor having excellent tensile strength and tear strength, provision of a degree of mechanical strength such that the separator does not break in a manufacturing process of a wound or a stacked type electric double-layer capacitor, and improvement of productivity without adversely affecting internal resistance and leakage current properties of the capacitor as an energy storage device.

The organic electrolytic solution is permeated into the electrode group or the electrode group is immersed in the organic electrolytic solution. A porosity (40% to 80%) of the fibrous layer (A) disposed at an interface between the fibrous layer (A) and the anode () is set smaller than a porosity (60% to 90%) of the fibrous layer (B) disposed at an interface between the fibrous layer (B) and the cathode (). An average porosity of the entire fibrous layer is set to not less than 50%. The fibrous layers are formed by using cellulose fibers as a main material thereof. An active substance for use in the anode () is a carbon material.
