A hammermill for singulating cellulosic fibers from a wet pulp sheet includes a cylindrical housing, a feed slot with a breaker bar positioned therein and a rotor mounted for rotation in the housing. Feed rolls are provided to feed a sheet of pulp into the feed slot upstream of the breaker bar. A plurality of hammers are mounted on the rotor. Air is introduced into the hammermill housing tangentially downstream from the second feed slot. An air outlet is positioned tangentially on the housing downstream from the air inlet to allow air and singulated fibers to escape. A process for producing singulated fibers includes wetting a fiber sheet, milling the fibers in the hammermill, and drying the fibers. The singulated fibers have a low knot content.

A hammermill for singulating cellulosic fibers from a pulp sheet comprises a cylindrical housing, a feed slot with a breaker bar positioned therein and a rotor mounted for rotation in the housing. The disclosure describes an apparatus and method for applying strips of tensioned elastic material transversely to a moving sheet or web of material, such as a component of a disposal diaper. The heart of the invention is a pair of inclinded, spaced apart transfer wheels located in mirror image relationship across the moving web. The transfer wheels are inclined relative to each other so that the distance between them is greatest at a point on their circumference that lies adjacent the web and least where a point on their circumference is at the greatest distance from the web. A supply drum provides an untensioned elastic strip to the transfer wheels at the point of least distance between them. As the transfer wheels move through 180.degree. of rotation, the elastic is stretched and then released at the plane of the web where it is adhesively bonded to the web. A drive system for the transfer wheels rotates them at a circumferential speed essentially equal to the linear speed of the moving web.

Waist elastic applicator for diaper or similar article

The invention is an improved attachment strap for a large diaper or adult incontinent pad. It consists of an accordion pleated length of material, preferably a nonwoven fabric, with one end permanently attached to the diaper body. The final pleat at the opposite end is terminated by a length of peelable pressure sensitive tape which overhangs each edge of the pleat. The medially oriented overhang is relatively narrow while the laterally oriented overhang, which ultimately serves as an attachment tab, is relatively wider. When in stored position, the two overhanging portions hold the folded tape compactly against the back face of the diaper where they do not interfere with manufacturing or packaging operations. The peelable attachment tape has an adhesive coating that is relatively high in shear strength but modest in peel strength. These characteristics are chosen so that the tape can be peeled off without tearing the diaper backing sheet. The diaper can be removed for inspection and then be reused, if unsoiled, without damage to the backing sheet.
