A process for separating a gas component from a gas mixture is disclosed. A gas mixture is passed through an adsorption zone which contains an adsorbent which will selectively adsorb a gaseous component from the gas mixture. The adsorption zone contains a layer of monolithic adsorbent and a layer of adsorption beads. Optionally, a third monolithic layer may be employed. The adsorption zone is typically contained in an adsorption vessel.

Adsorption processes

Apparatus and method for controlling the composition of the atmosphere within a refrigerated container during the storage and/or transportation of perishable and/or respiring produce in which carbon dioxide and ethylene (and other evolved hydrocarbons) are removed from the container atmosphere by adsorption, the adsorptive materials being regenerated with ambient air.

Atmosphere control for perishable produce

The present invention provides for novel solid state O -selective metal complex-based adsorbents and their utility for separating oxygen from a gas stream. In particular, the invention provides for an adsorption complex which contains four-coordinate O -selective metal complexes including oligomeric/polymeric metal complexes, and organic base-containing polymers supported on porous materials.

Oxygen-selective adsorbents

A rotary valve system which includes of a pair of valve assemblies each of which has valve parts with flat faces which, when pressed together and rotated, provide valving action between various ports incorporated in one valve part of each assembly. The first valve part of each assembly contains a circular array of through openings, each of which is connected to a conduit. The second valve part of each assembly contains several passages which provide communication between various openings of the first valve part and valve apertures located in the second valve part of each assembly. The second valve part of each assembly also contains one or more passages which provide communication between members of one or the other array of openings. The valve system can be effectively used to automate operation of a gas or liquid adsorption system comprising two or more adsorption vessels, the number of vessels being equivalent to the total number of openings in either array. Use of the valve assembly in an adsorption system eliminates the need for many of the valves required in conventional multivessel adsorption systems.

A system for controlling the atmosphere within a container, including a plurality of adsorption beds for the selective removal on a cyclical basis and in a predetermined order of at least part of any water vapour, ethylene, carbon dioxide and oxygen components present in the atmosphere in an adsorption phase of the cycle mechanism for controlling the flow of atmosphere within the system and mechanism for desorbing the adsorption beds in accordance with a desorption phase of the cycle.

Controlling atmospheres in containers

The components of a gas mixture are separated by pressure swing adsorption in a plurality of adsorption vessels. In the first step of the half-cycle adsorption takes place in a first bed while the second bed undergoes countercurrent desorption. At the end of the first step the first bed is vented countercurrently and the first and second beds undergo, as a first bed equalization step, outlet-to-outlet equalization or outlet to both inlet and outlet equalization. The vent step may precede or be concurrent with the first bed equalization step. In a second equalization step the beds simultaneously undergo inlet-to-inlet and outlet-to-outlet equalization. The second bed is then further pressurized with nonadsorbed product gas. The half cycle is then repeated but with the first bed being substituted for the second bed and vice versa.

Pressure swing adsorption process

A system for controlling the atmosphere of a container for use in the storage and/or transportation of perishable goods which includes adsorption apparatus for the selective adsorption in whole or in part and in a predeterminded order of any water vapor, carbon dioxide, oxygen or ethylene contained within the atmosphere, a blower for urging the atmosphere to the adsorption apparatus, and a conduiting for returning the controlled atmosphere to the container.
