Monostable shifting mechanism, in which two shifting channels are provided for the shift lever. 'Monostable' means that the shifting element or the shift lever has only one stable position. As a function of the actual 'operating condition' of the shifting mechanism, certain other operating conditions can be selected by means of the deflection of the shift lever. For this purpose, the shift lever is deflected manually in either one or the other shifting channel and, after the release, automatically returns into the stable starting position from any possible deflected position.

A driving position selector for selecting at least the driving steps of the automatic transmission, &ldquo;D&rdquo;, &ldquo;N&rdquo;, &ldquo;R&rdquo;, &ldquo;P&rdquo;, which are selected by the driver over a control device and engaged by electro-hydraulic setting elements is provided. It is possible to disengage a parking position by a release device in the automatic transmission housing. An operating device is connected by a Bowden cable with a release lever of the release device. The swiveling motion of the release lever is not transferred to the Bowden traction cord, since the release lever can move along a Bowden traction cord suspended in the release lever.

A selecting device for an automatic transmission of a motor vehicle is suggested in the case of which the selector lever can be swivelled back and forth between two different shifting channels. One shifting channel for the step shifting permits a manual shifting of the automatic transmission; the other shifting channel for engaging the individual driving positions permits the automatic operation of the transmission. The selecting device is designed such that it requires little space and is constructed in a simple manner of few component parts.

A selecting device for an automatic transmission of a motor vehicle includes a selector lever which can be swivelled back and forth between two different shifting channels. One shifting channel is for the step-by-step manual shifting of the automatic transmission. The other shifting channel facilitates the automatic operation of the transmission. The selector lever is pivotally mounted for movement in the two shifting channels about a first shaft axis and for movement between the shifting channels about a second shaft axis. The second shaft axis extends along a pivot shaft which is fixedly disposed in a vehicle frame. The first and second shaft axes are congruent when the selector lever is in the shifting channel for automatic operation. Shifting and interlocking devices are integrated in the selecting device.

This invention relates to a selector lever for a motor vehicle transmission, in the case of which, by way of a push button, a detent element can be moved so that the selector lever can be adjusted into different positions. In order to allow a restoring of the detent element to take place with as little noise as possible, the restoring movement is damped according to the invention. In a suitable manner, a visco-damper is used for this purpose.
