A silencer () for an exhaust gas installation of an internal combustion engine, particularly of a motor vehicle includes a housing (), with a circumferential shell () closed in the peripheral direction () and an end base () at each of two longitudinal ends, spaced apart in an axial direction (). A silencer insert () is arranged in the housing () and has an inlet pipe () for exhaust gas and an outlet pipe () for exhaust gas. The shell () has, in the peripheral direction () has at least one inlet shell-segment () and one outlet shell-segment (). The inlet shell-segment has at least one inlet opening (), into which such an inlet pipe () is inserted from the inside. The outlet shell-segment () has at least one outlet opening () into which such an outlet pipe () is inserted from the inside.

Silencer and a method for producing same

A muffler () for an exhaust system of an internal combustion engine, especially of a motor vehicle, with a housing (), which has a jacket () and an end bottom each at two mutually spaced longitudinal ends of the jacket (). At least one jacket opening () is provided, which passes through the jacket () and through which an inner tube () arranged in the interior of housing () can be connected to a tube of the exhaust system. The manufacture of the muffler () can be simplified if the jacket () is segmented in the circumferential direction () and has a jacket segment (), which is manufactured as a separate component in relation to the remaining jacket (). The separate component jacket segment () is rigidly connected to the remaining jacket () and has the at least one jacket opening ().

Muffler and corresponding manufacturing process

The present invention relates to a method of pressing a bearing jacket () onto a monolith () of a catalytic converter, in particular in a motor vehicle. The bearing jacket () surrounding the monolith () on the perimeter is pressed during an initial phase onto the monolith () in a first peripheral section () and in a second peripheral section (), whereby the two peripheral sections () together are smaller than the total circumference of the monolith () surrounded by the bearing jacket pressed onto it. The bearing jacket () is pressed onto the monolith () during a subsequent second phase in at least one third peripheral section (), which is situated between the first peripheral section () and the second peripheral section (), whereby the first peripheral section () and the second peripheral section () together with all the third peripheral sections () are the same size as the total circumference.
