A stream of successive sheets of paper, foil or the like is converted into a series of piles at a stacking station where successive sheets are caused to descend onto a pallet which is adjacent a monitoring device serving to transmit signals denoting the levels of successive uppermost sheets of a growing pile. Such signals are processed by a unit which controls one or more valves in a pneumatic elevator for the discharge end of the endless flexible conveyor which supplies successive sheets to the stacking station. The elevator ensures that the distance between the discharge end of the conveyor and the uppermost sheets of the growing pile remains within a preselected range. This contributes to the accuracy of stacking of sheets on their pallet.

Method of and apparatus for stacking sheets of paper and the like

Apparatus for accumulating successive stacks of superimposed sheets on discrete pallets employs a conveyor which delivers a continuous imbricated stream of sheets to a stacking station where a pallet descends with an elevator and gathers a first stack. A separating finger is inserted into the accumulation of sheets at the stacking station at a level above the topmost sheet of the fully grown first stack. The thus obtained gap is increased by lowering the finger at a speed less than that of the elevator, the increased gap receives a positioning member which attracts the lower part of the growing second stack by suction, a table is inserted into the increased gap between the partitioning member and the fully grown stack, the fully grown stack and its pallet are withdrawn from the stacking station and replaced with a fresh pallet, the table and the partitioning member are withdrawn from the stacking station so that the growing second stack descends onto the second pallet, and the above-enumerated sequence of steps is tereupon repeated.

Method of and apparatus for accumulating successive stacks of superimposed sheets

Apparatus for expelling air from between the sheets of stacks of superimposed sheets has a conveyor which advances successive stacks of a series of stacks along a horizontal first path from a stack assembling first station toward a second station. The conveyor employs a reciprocable carriage for one or more tongs which engage the front end portion of fresh stack at the first station and entrain the stack toward the second station. A roller is mounted in a conveyance for repeated movement with the conveyance along a downwardly sloping second path from a raised position above and away from the first path to a lowered position of engagement with successive stacks which are being advanced toward the second station. The conveyance is provided with a follower which tracks a vertical guide on the carriage to ensure that the roller moves vertically downwardly into engagement with a freshly gathered stack immediately behind the tongs irrespective of the height of the sack to thus ensure at least substantially complete expulsion of entrapped air (if any) when the conveyance is arrested as soon as the roller engages an advancing stack but the thus engaged stack continues to advance toward its second position.

Apparatus for expelling air from stacks of superimposed sheets

An apparatus for stacking successive rapidly advancing sheets of a stream of sheets has a platform which receives successive sheets and descends at the rate of accumulation of one or more stacks thereon. The sheets are delivered by one or more overhead belt conveyors in cooperation with one or more lower belt conveyors. The front end turn of the lower reach of each overhead conveyor is deflected around a small-diameter rigid rod immediately in front of a stop for the leaders of successive sheets to reduce the likelihood of buckling during stacking, and one or more downwardly sloping ramps are provided in front of the stop to deflect the leaders of successive sheets in a downward direction toward the leaders of the immediately preceding sheets in immediate or close proximity of the stop. The stop, the rod and the overhead conveyor or conveyors are adjustable in several directions to facilitate a change of setup for the stacking of longer, shorter, wider or narrower sheets. At least one of the ramps has one or more openings for the front end turn or turns of the overhead conveyor or conveyors.

Apparatus for stacking sheets

A cross cutter for a running web of paper which is transported along a horizontal path has an upper rotary knife holder above and a lower rotary knife holder below the horizontal path. The holders carry knives which extend transversely of the path, and each holder further carries an elastic lip-shaped deflector which is located behind the respective knife and serves to maintain the leader of the web behind the separated length of the web in or close to the path so that the leader can enter a transporting unit which advances the severed lengths of the web to a stacking or other processing station. The lower deflector is installed immediately behind and the upper deflector is spaced apart from the rear side of the respective knife.
