A cutting tool, in particular of hard metal, which is coated with hard layers of titanium carbide, titanium carbonitride and/or titanium nitride and that has an outer thin layer of zirconium nitride. The thickness of this outer layer of zirconium nitride amounts to between 1 and 30%, preferably 1 to 10%, of the thickness of the base coating of titanium carbide, titanium carbonitride and/or titanium nitride.

Cutting tool

A process for producing a coated molded body according to the CVD process, in which at least one layer of hard material, consisting of carbides, nitrides and/or carbonitrides of the elements titanium, zirconium, hafnium, niobium and/or tantalum is deposited on a metallic substrate from a reactive gas phase. The gas phase contains aluminium trichloride, aluminium tribromide or magnesium chloride in a molar ratio of from 0.1:1 to 5:1, with respect to the halide of titanium, zirconium, hafnium, niobium and/or tantalum which is in the gas phase.

Process for producing coated molded bodies

A coated hardmetal body comprised of a hardmetal core which contains cobalt as well as tungsten carbide and of an oxygen containing hard substance layer free of binder metal is disclosed whose hardmetal basic body has a zone at its surface which is 0.2 to 20 microns thick and which contains the CoWB phase in addition to the hardmetal components. It is of particular advantage for the binder metal free, oxygen containing hard substance layer to be composed of aluminum oxide, zirconium oxide or aluminum oxynitride. It is further provided that at least one further binder metal free hard substance layer of carbides, nitrides, borides and/or oxides is applied to the binder metal free hard oxide layer. The coated hardmetal body may advantageously be used as a cutting bit for machining metallic workpieces. The coated hardmetal body is produced by gas phase boration and subsequent hard substance coating according to the CVD process.

Coated hardmetal body

The present invention relates to an improved toolholder for releasably mounting on a tool support member. The toolholder is provided with a forward end for receiving a tool and a shank extending from the forward end for being releasably received in a bore of a tool support member. The shank has a first section for interference fitting with the bore of the tool support member when a rearwardly facing face on the toolholder is in abutment with a forwardly facing surface on the tool support member. The shank has a second section, rearwardly of its first section, for expansible abutment with the bore of the tool support member.

Toolholder and method of releasably mounting

A sintered tungsten carbide material and method for manufacturing same in which the method includes the steps of combining metal particles composed of from 75 to 95 percent by weight of a composition containing at least 70 percent by weight of tungsten carbide and from 5 to 25 percent by weight of a binder metal composition, the binder metal composition consisting essentially of from 5 to 15 percent by weight of chromium and from 85 to 95 percent by weight of nickel; pressing the metal particles into a pressed body; sintering the pressed body in a sintering chamber for a period ranging from 20 to 200 minutes, at a temperature ranging from 1400.degree. to 1500.degree. C., and in a protective atmosphere which is one of a vacuum, a noble gas, a mixture of noble gases, and hydrogen gas to form a sintered body; and treating the sintered body for a period ranging from 20 to 200 minutes, at a temperature ranging from 1300.degree. to 1400.degree. C., at a pressure ranging from 20 to 3000 bar, and in a noble gas atmosphere. The pressure/temperature treatment step densifies the sintered composition and results in an unexpectedly stronger and tougher sintered metal.

Sintered tungsten carbide material and manufacturing method

A linearly and angularly adjustable holder for a cutting tool having primary and secondary cutting edges includes a basic element, a receptacle element for the cutting tool rotatably mounted on the basic element, and a setting element slidably mounted on the basic element. The receptacle element is mounted on the basic element so as to be pivotal about the point of intersection of the primary and secondary cutting edges of the cutting bit. An adjustment screw 50 whose threaded portion is seated in the basic element and whose head engages a recess in the receptacle element serves to perform the angular adjustment. The linear adjustment is accomplished with the aid of a double threaded adjustment screw which connects a wedge and the basic element and which slidably engages the setting member to control the length of the holder.

Adjustable holder for a cutting tool

A tool assembly includes a tool holder, a tool head and a clamping arrangement for rapidly releasably tightening the tool head to the tool holder. The clamping arrangement includes a clamping bar having a longitudinal axis and being received in the tool holder and a clamping piston connected to the clamping bar for displacement therewith. The clamping piston has first and second wedge faces arranged symmetrically to the bar axis and each defining therewith a first acute angle of at least 45.degree.. The clamping arrangement further has first and second cams movable in a direction of motion perpendicular to the bar axis. Each cam has a camming face constituted at least in part by a surface defining, with the direction of motion of the cams, a second acute angle equalling the difference between 90.degree. and the first acute angle. Further, a mechanism is provided for displacing the cams towards or away from one another for effecting, by camming action between the wedge faces and the camming faces, longitudinal displacements of the clamping piston and the clamping bar.

Tool assembly having a replaceable tool head

In order to reliably shape and remove the cut chip under different cutting conditions a polygonal cutting bit is proposed for cutting tools having raised chip forming elements wherein the chip forming elements are given essentially the shape of a pyramid frustum. Advantageously the pyramid frustum forming the chip forming element has a triangular shape with concavely extending side faces and/or rounded corners. The chip forming elements are possibly disposed in chip forming grooves which again are of a concave or stepped design and are at least in part face ground and no higher than the cover face of the cutting bit.

Polygonal cutting bit

A cutting tool which includes a mounting shaft and a chip breaker positioned on the mounting shaft. A cutting plate is supported between the mounting shaft and the chip breaker, with a clamping jaw being positioned on the chip breaker. A clamping screw is releasably held in the cutting tool mounting shaft for holding the clamping jaw and the chip breaker against the tool mounting shaft. The clamping screw has a longitudinal axis and an outer portion which is situated externally of the clamping jaw. A spring is provided for urging the chip breaker against the clamping jaw. The clamping jaw and the chip breaker have interengaging teeth on their surfaces which are oriented towards one another. The chip breaker further includes a throughgoing aperture through which the clamping screw passes. The throughgoing aperture is enlarged to form an elongated opening for permitting lateral movement of the chip breaker transversely to the longitudinal axis of the clamping screw.

A compound body comprising a metallic basic body, an inner layer or layers of carbides and/or nitrides of Ti, Zr, Hf, V, Nb, Ta, Cr, Mo, W, Si, or B, and an outer layer or layers of a mixture of oxides and nitrides and/or oxynitrides of Cr, Al, Ca, Mg, Th, Sc, Y, La, Ti, Hf, V, Nb, or Ta. The compound body can be used as a part subject to wear, and for machining metallic materials.

Compound body

A wear-resistant shaped body comprises a core of a hard metal body and a surface coating on the core, with the hard metal body core containing at least one carbide suitable as a hard material and at least one binder metal. The surface coating is composed of two superimposed layers including an outer, extremely wear-resistant layer consisting essentially of aluminum oxide and/or zirconium oxide. The inner layer is composed of at least one boride selected from the group consisting of borides of the elements titanium, zirconium, hafnium, vanadium, niobium, tantalum, chromium, molybdenum and tungsten.
