Process for economy chrome tanning, which comprises pretreating the pelt prior to tanning with 0.5 to 2% by weight, preferably 0.7 to 1,2% by weight, of an aldehyde- or keto-carboxylic acid, tanning in a conventional manner and then finish-tanning with 2 to 4.5% by weight of a mixture of a chromium(III) salt, an acid-binding agent and an aromatic di- or tricarboxylic acid or a salt thereof.

Economy chrome tanning

The leather is treated with a resin, quaternary ammonium compound, amine or polymer before the impregnation with the fluoro chemicals. With these auxiliaries, a uniform effectiveness of the fluoro chemicals which act on the surface is achieved, regardless of the procedure or the chemicals previously introduced into the leather. These auxiliaries can optionally also be applied to the leather together with the fluoro chemicals.

The process for the short-term preservation of rawhides and skins with an alkali metal chlorite solution which additionally also contains a compound of the formula 1 ##STR1## in which R denotes hydrogen or C.sub.1 -C.sub.12 -alkyl, Me denotes hydrogen or an alkali metal atom and n denotes 1 or 2. Because of their hydrotropic action, the addition of these compounds improves uniform penetration of the preservation solution into the hide.

Methylolated and optionally etherified urethanes containing fluoroalkyl ligans with formaldehyde, with or witout subsequent etherification, and are in the form of their solutions or aqueous dispersions suitable for the treatment of textiles and leather.
