A method of protecting a microcomputer system against manipulation of data stored in a memory assembly of the microcomputer system is provided. The method may protect, for example, a control program stored in the memory assembly of a motor vehicle control device. To secure and reliably protect the microcomputer system against manipulation of the data, the data is stored in the memory assembly marked or encrypted using an asymmetrical encryption method. The data may, for example, be encrypted outside the microcomputer system using an encryption algorithm and a private key, which is accessible to only a limited group of persons. The data may be decrypted in the microcomputer system using a decryption algorithm and a freely accessible public key.

An engine control unit for a vehicle control unit arrangement is preconfigured to perform a plurality of functions and configures its own range of functions by activating selected preconfigured functions as well as a method for the manipulation-proof configuration of the engine control unit. To activate a preconfigured function, the engine control unit issues a signal for detecting the presence of component control units connected to it. It then requests an item of information for activating a function preconfigured in the control unit from a component control unit that was detected. After receiving an item of activation information, it activates the corresponding preconfigured function.

In a process for determining the amount of time elapsed between stopping a motor vehicle engine and restarting the engine, when the engine is restarted, the time information representing the time when the engine was stopped is subtracted from the time information representing the time when the engine was restarted. The time information representing the respective times is obtained from an on-board clock that serves to display the time in the motor vehicle.

Control device for internal combustion engines

The invention is directed to a mixture metering arrangement for an internal combustion engine with a digital data processor, particularly a microcomputer, the signal processing pattern of which is governed by clock pulses, and with a signal generating means which delivers analog output signals. The signal generating means is responsive to operating parameters of the internal combustion engine and is an exhaust gas sensor responsive to the air ratio Lambda. The exhaust gas sensor is used in a closed-loop control system to influence the air-fuel ratio and changes its output quantity at the air ratio of Lambda=1. In this arrangement, a correcting stage corrects the influence of a delay time (t.sub.v) connected with the clocked signal processing on the mixture formation. The delay occurs in the transmission of the change in the output of the sensor. Two methods are indicated for the mode of operation of the correcting stage by means of which a mean value shift of the quantity (F.sub.R) influencing the mixture formation is avoided and the concentration of toxic substances in the exhaust gases is minimized. Flowcharts are disclosed to realize the invention by means of a suitably programmed microcomputer.

Mixture metering arrangement for an internal combustion engine

An oscillator is connected to a backward counter to set the backward counter to a count number representative of its frequency of oscillation, the backward counter being stepped down by clock pulses recurring at a frequency high with respect to the cycling rate of the oscillator until it reaches a reference value, for example zero. The difference between the reference value and the count state of the counter when a predetermined counting period has elapsed, as determined by the duration of one cycle of the input signal, forms an error signal which is transmitted over a bi-directional counter to an integrator which, in turn, controls the oscillator. The system is particularly applicable for use in connection with vehicle wheel brake anti-lock arrangements, and permits determination of wheel speed by oscillation of the oscillator as well as acceleration and deceleration by sensing the error signal.
