The invention relates to a method and a transfer strip for decorating surfaces, in particular for decorating outer packagings. A transfer strip comprising a strip-like backing film (), a decorative layer () and a release layer () arranged between the decorative layer () and the backing film is provided. The decorative layer () has a multiplicity of identical optically variable decorative elements, which are arranged in first area regions, which are separate from one another and spaced apart from one another in the longitudinal direction of the transfer strip. The decorative layer () has second area regions, which are separate from one another and spaced apart from one another in the longitudinal direction of the transfer strip and in which the decorative layer () has one or more individualizable layers for providing respectively different machine-readable optical markings. A first area region or a subregion of a first area region and a second area region or a subregion of a second area region of the decorative layer () is respectively transferred to a surface to be decorated. The invention concerns an apparatus and a process for producing a marking on a substrate. Substrates marked in that way are applied to documents such as for example credit cards, personal identity cards or banknotes as security features to provide protection from forgery. Embodiments of those security features have diffractive or holographic structures. The production of the markings was hitherto effected by shaping from a mold. A change in the marking is possible by changing the mole, which is time-consuming. The new apparatus and the new process are intended to permit the production of individualized markings on a substrate, at a low level of apparatus expenditure. An embodiment of the apparatus according to the invention for producing a marking on a substrate, preferably a film, has a replication apparatus and a laser installation, which co-operates with the replication apparatus, by radiation from the laser installation being directed onto at least one irradiation region of the replication apparatus, for producing at least one shaping region. The apparatus further has a counterpressure apparatus, wherein a substrate is arranged between the replication apparatus and the counterpressure apparatus in order to shape the shaping region onto the substrate in a contact region between the replication apparatus and the substrate and wherein the feed of the radiation for producing the shaping regions extends outside the substrate.

Laser-assisted replication method

A process for the production of a multi-color image is described. Preferably a transfer film is used which has a laser-sensitive layer (). The laser-sensitive layer () comprises a three-component mixture. The components are coloring agents which are bleachable with laser radiation, in particular pigments, for example cyan pigment, magenta pigment and yellow pigment. With the process the procedure is such that in the individual steps only a respective one of the pigment components is bleached insofar as the laser conditions which are respectively specific to the various pigment components are set. This means that in the case of the three-component mixture only a first component is bleached by laser treatment of a given location in a first step by laser irradiation and only one other component is bleached in an optional second step and only one third component is bleached in an optional third step. The color at the location in question is afforded in each case by subtractive color mixing of the remaining unbleached components.

The invention relates to a process for the production of a multi-layer image, preferably a multi-color image. A transfer film which is applied to a paper ubstrate and which is treated with laser irradiation is used. The transfer film has a laser-sensitive layer and a background layer arranged therebeneath. The laser-sensitive layer comprises laser-sensitive material, for example laser-sensitive pigments or other laser-sensitive coloring agents. The laser-sensitive material in the layer is region-wise bleached by laser irradiation. That results in a so-called laser-induced image component. As it is transparent or partly transparent, the background layer which is arranged therebeneath and which can have a printed image then becomes visible from above in that region. That therefore gives a multi-layer image which is formed by the laser-induced image component and by the background layer jointly.

The new apparatus has a replication apparatus, in the form of a replication roller, having a replication surface, a device for producing a radiation and a counterpressure apparatus with a counterpressure surface, wherein a substrate is arranged between the replication surface of the replication apparatus and the counterpressure surface of the counterpressure apparatus in such a way that a shaping region of the replication surface is shaped on to the substrate in a contact region between the replication surface and the substrate.

Laser-supported reproduction method

Described is a multi-layer body having two laser-sensitive layers. The multi-layer body is a body laminated from the overlay films, the inletsand the further overlay films. At its underside the upper overlay filmhas a layer structure applied there, by the application of a hot stamping film. The layer structure comprises a lacquer layer, a reflection layer, a laser-sensitive layer, a background layerand an adhesive layer. A diffraction and/or hologram structureis provided in the lacquer layer, the reflection layerand the laser-sensitive layer. The present invention relates to a process for increasing the level of safeguard in respect of forgery of paper documents. For that purpose, applied to the paper document is a transfer film or laminating film having a laser-sensitive layer. This multi-layer body is then treated with laser radiation. In that case, a laser-induced marking is produced in the laser-sensitive layer, for example, by laser-induced bleaching, laser-induced color change or laser-induced blackening. Respective individualization of the document can be effected by way of that laser-induced marking.

The present invention relates to a multi-layer body which is a paper document with a hot stamping film embossed thereon.
