The invention relates to a method of lighting a road with a vehicle headlight, in which the projected light is modulated in response to the presence of any persons on the road. The method comprises the following operations: detecting in the road scene at least one person, pinpointing the location of the person in the road scene, creating on an imager a mask having dimensions and position corresponding to the person, and lighting the road through the imager, to create a projected shadow around the person. The invention also provides a headlight for performing this method and having a first light source towards the imager, and an electronic system for generating light-occulting masks on the imager.

Headlight for a motor vehicle comprising a reflector and a light source (S) running transversely to the optical axis (Y&#x2014;Y) of the reflector and placed near the focal point of the reflector. The transverse light source (S) is placed near the internal focal point (Fi) of an ellipsoidal reflector (R). The wall of the ellipsoidal reflector has a cutout () situated on one side of the plane passing through the geometric axis of the light source (S) and parallel to the optical axis (Y&#x2014;Y) of the ellipsoidal reflector. A lens () with an optical axis parallel to or coincident with that of the ellipsoidal reflector (R) is placed in front of this reflector, the focal point () of the lens being close to the external focal point (Fe) of the ellipsoidal reflector. A verticalized reflector (R) is arranged on the opposite side of the cutout () to the most-part of the ellipsoidal reflector (R), this verticalized reflector (R) being designed to produce, from the source (S) housed in the ellipsoidal reflector, a long-range beam which is not intercepted by the lens, the ellipsoidal reflector giving a wide beam of shorter range.

According to the invention, the reflector comprises a parabolic base part and side pieces in the form of parabolic cylinders focussed on the filament, and in addition there are deflecting means, for example toroidal lenses, which re-direct the inclined rays of light received from the filament into the horizontal direction, towards the side pieces. A greater proportion of the luminous flux is thus recovered, which enables production of lamps with a small height and with a high efficiency.

The invention relates to a masked beam motor vehicle headlamp of the type comprising, in succession: a reflector (1); a light source (3); a masking screen (E) having a cutoff edge (A); and a converging lens (4). The headlamp is characterized in that the screen is fitted, beneath its cutoff edge (A) and at least in its central portion, with an opening suitable for allowing a portion of the light flux directed towards the screen to pass therethrough. An adaptor in accordance with the invention serves to couple a cylindrical light guide (40) with a light source (10). A headlamp comprising a reflector of which at least one sector is in the form of a paraboloid of reduction, a bulb with an axial filament offset upwards in the radial direction with respect to the axis of the paraboloid, and a light-distributing glass placed in front of the reflector. The filament is centered in the axial direction on the focus of the paraboloid. The surfaces of the reflector situated outside the sector in the form of a paraboloid are designed so as to produce images of the filament which are all situated below the cut-off. Alternatively, the light-distributing glass participates in the deflection, in combination with the surfaces of the reflector. In an advantageous variant the reflector is completely parabolic and homologous deflecting zones are then provided on the light-distributing glass to lower all the images thus produced below the cut-off.
