A computer-implemented system stores profiles for parties to the negotiation, each profile specifying values for one or more parameters negotiated, the values reflecting a desirable outcome of the negotiation for the associated party. A matching server accesses an offer from a first party containing values for one or more of the parameters negotiated and computes a distance between the offer values and the profile values of a second party. If the distance is acceptably small, the server causes the offer to be accepted by the second party to conclude the negotiation. If the distance is not acceptably small, the server automatically modifies one or more values in the offer such that the distances between the modified offer and the profiles of the first and second parties are acceptably small simultaneously and causes the modified offer to be accepted by the first and second parties to conclude the automatic negotiation.

System and method for negotiating according to improved matching criteria

A method of providing visualization of market offers includes receiving offer data for multiple offers, the offer data reflecting values specified in the offers for multiple offer variables. The method further includes generating a display of the offer data. The display includes multiple patterns, each pattern representing a particular offer and including multiple bars. Each bar within the pattern represents a particular offer variable and includes a set of one or more geometric display elements that by virtue of their appearance collectively encode, according to a predefined encoding scheme, a value for the offer variable corresponding to the bar.

A computer-implemented system () for conducting automatic negotiations stores profiles for parties () to the negotiation, each profile specifying values for one or more parameters being negotiated, the values reflecting a desirable outcome of the negotiation for the associated party (). A matching server () accesses an offer from a first party () containing values for one or more of the parameters being negotiated and computes a distance between the offer values and the profile values of a second party (). If the distance is acceptably small, the matching server () causes the offer to be accepted by the second party () to conclude the negotiation. Alternatively, if the distance is not acceptably small, the matching server () automatically modifies one or more values in the offer such that the distances between the modified offer and the profiles of the first and second parties () are acceptably small simultaneously and, in response, causes the modified offer to be accepted by both the first and second parties () to conclude the automatic negotiation. Similar distance computation and offer evaluation may occur at one or both of the parties () instead of, or possibly in addition to, at the matching server ().

A system for retrieving information for a user includes a database containing values for one or more parameters of one or more available items, each available item with corresponding parameter values. A matching server receives values for one or more parameters of a target item, these parameters being organized into subsets. The matching server applies the parameter values for the target item against the database and, for each available item and each parameter subset of the target item, computes a distance between the parameter values for the available item and the parameter values for the target item. For each of the parameter subsets, the matching server then applies a weight to the distance to compute a weighted distance for the parameter subset. The matching server computes an overall distance between the available item and the target item based on the weighted distances for the parameter subsets and returns results to the user reflecting the overall distance for the available item. The user may be a buyer and the overall distance for the available item may allow the buyer to make a purchasing decision with respect to the available item.
