The present invention relates to a control system for use with an automated intravenous drug and fluid infusion system having plural pumping channels that operate independently for intravenously infusing drugs and fluid. The pumping channels are controlled by a microprocessor-based host controller that monitors each of the channels concurrently. In an exemplary embodiment, the system functions include identifying the particular drug that is to be pumped through a channel, preventing priming of a channel unless verification is provided that the channel is not connected to a patient and initiating the priming of each of the pumping channels independently.

Automated drug infusion system

A host controller (10) selectively predicts and controls drug concentrations for each of a plurality of channels delivered through multiple drug channels of a multi-channel drug delivery system. The host controller includes a controller (32) that is coupled to each drug channel of the multi-channel drug delivery system to receive actual drug delivery rate information. Delivery of each drug can be selectively separately controlled by a PK model (the same PK model for each channel or different PK models for different channels) to achieve either a desired setpoint for a blood plasma drug concentration or a setpoint for an effect compartment drug concentration. Control of the drug delivery by the PK model can be selectively interrupted during operation of the multi-channel drug delivery system, to switch to a manual mode in order to administer a bolus dose or a continuous infusion, and then, control of drug infusion using the PK model can be subsequently resumed. The blood plasma and/or effect compartment drug concentrations for any drug predicted in accordance with a PK model are selectively displayed to a user on an electroluminescent (EL) display (36), even during operation of the multi-channel drug delivery system in the manual mode, or after the drug delivery has been terminated. Prediction of drug concentration is tracked for each drug administered, enabling multiple drugs to successively administered in the same drug channel and control of a drug delivery by the PK model to continue when the drug channel used to administer the drug is changed.

Control of a multi-channel drug infusion pump using a pharmacokinetic

A pumping system for positive displacement, volumetric liquid control includes a pump having a pumping chamber with a pumping chamber inlet and a pumping chamber outlet. The pumping system further includes a liquid supply inlet for receiving liquid from a liquid supply, and an detector for detecting air in liquid flowing through the liquid path. A liquid valve actuator regulates liquid flow through the liquid supply inlet and a second valve actuator regulates liquid flow through the pumping system outlet. A controller is responsive to an output from the detector to control the pump, the first valve actuator and the second valve actuator such that liquid is directed through the liquid supply inlet and the pumping system outlet during an initial priming sequence until the quantity of air in liquid at the pumping system outlet corresponds to a predetermined value.

Automated drug infusion system with autopriming

A drug identification and security apparatus usable in conjunction with an electronic drug delivery system having at least one drug channel therein, the apparatus providing a first interlock mechanism between a locking member of the apparatus and the drug delivery system to lock the upper and lower doors of the drug channel and to disengage the drug delivery system and prevent removal of a drug container/cassette assembly when the locking member is in a locked position. A second interlock mechanism is interposed between a bar code reading device usable with the drug delivery apparatus and a sensor provided on the drug delivery system, the sensor assuring the placement of a cassette assembly in a drug channel with a scanner activating a switch to enable the scanner to read identifying indicia provided on a drug container of a cassette assembly installed in the drug channel, and both cassette sensor and scanner switch must be activated to enable a scan of a drug container installed in the drug channel, to enable the drug delivery system to deliver the drug in the container through the drug channel to the patient receiving a drug dosage in a controlled amount and at a controlled delivery rate.

A multiple inlet manifold for mixing and transporting therethrough fluids under pressure comprising a manifold body including a plurality of valve inlets and a single outlet, a mixing chamber provided between the valve inlets and the outlet, and a flexible membrane disposed between the valve inlets and the outlet to retain the valve inlets normally closed at selected levels of fluid pressure. Fluid flow under pressure opens a valve inlet to enable fluid flow into the mixing chamber.
