An intraocular lens (20) for use as an artificial lens implant is disclosed. The intraocular lens includes a lens body (21) having first and second relatively rigid members (24) and (30). Hinges (40) and (45) provide means for resiliently cooperatively connecting the first section (24) to the second section (30). The first section (24) is foldable with respect to the second section (30), wherein the lens body (21) may be folded from an operational configuration to a smaller insertion configuration making implantation possible through a smaller cut in the cornea of the eye than would otherwise be possible and after insertion and upon release of the hinges (40) and (45) the lens body (21) returns to the operational configuration without further manipulation. Three embodiments of the intraocular lens (20), (50) and (80) are disclosed.

Foldable intraocular lens

A bifocal intraocular lens (20) for use as an artificial lens implant is disclosed. The bifocal intraocular lens (20) includes a lens body (21) having a chord (20b) and also having first and second relatively rigid members (24) and (30). The first section (24) is positioned on one side of the chord (20b) and the second section (30) is positioned on the other side of the chord (20b). The first section (24) has a focal length and the second section (30) has a focal length different from the focal length of the first section (24). Three embodiments of the bifocal intraocular lens (20, 50 and 80) are disclosed.

Foldable bifocal intraocular lens

An intraocular lens for use as an artificial lens impant in the posterior chamber of the human eye adjacent the posterior capsule, after extracapsular extraction is disclosed. The intraocular lens includes an optical lens body, and a continuous ring-like member spaced from the rear surface of the lens body by a plurality of supporting bosses which are attached to and extend directly rewardly from a peripheral portion of the rear surface of the lens body. The continuous ring-like member is preferably made of PROLENE.RTM. and forms a resilient seal against the posterior capsule of the eye when implanted in the posterior capsule, thereby extending the period of time between cataract extraction and subsequent corrective micro-surgery necessitated by secondary cataract growth.

An intraocular lens for use as an artificial lens implant is disclosed. The intraocular lens includes an optical lens body having a periphery and two curved, elongated and resilient haptic members for positioning and supporting the lens in the eye. Each haptic member has an inner or root end and an outer or free end. The haptic member are integrally formed with the lens body as a one-piece construction at the root ends thereof. The haptic members extend outwardly from the lens body along an arc exterior to the periphery of the lens body. Each haptic member has at least a portion thereof tapered or reduced in cross sectional dimension in a direction therealong from the root end toward the free end.

The present invention is directed to an intraocular lens having a lens body which includes a primary portion and secondary portions. The secondary portions are connected to the primary portion with connect members. The secondary portions may be folded with respect to the primary portion so that a smaller perimeter for the lens body is possible during lens insertion into the eye thereby requiring a smaller incision in the cornea than is otherwise possible.
