An apparatus and a method for controlling the amount of solar energy and heat transferred into and out of a building or other structure through a glazed opening using a system of pneumatically actuated, reflective shutters. The air discharged from the blower flows through a venturi. The venturi communicates with a system of inflatable, reflective shutter elements. A control valve downstream from the venturi regulates airflow through the venturi. A photoelectric sensing element is installed at the level of the growing plants. The electric current generated by the sensing element is proportional to the intensity of the sunlight entering through the glazed roof. The control valve is operated by an electrical control means which responds to the electric current generated by the photoelectric sensing element. When the intensity of sunlight exceeds the desired intensity, air flowing through the venturi is restricted and redirected to inflate the inflatable, reflective shutter elements to the degree necessary to obtain the desired intensity of sunlight. The inflatable shutter elements have a specular reflective surface so that sunlight is reflected from the shutter elements without a change in wavelength thus permitting the reflected sunlight to exit through the glazed surface. When the intensity of sunlight is less than the desired intensity, air flow through the venturi is increased thereby creating a low pressure in the venturi and evacuating air from the inflatable reflective shutter elements thus causing the shutter elements to collapse to a minimal thickness and block only a negligible amount of sunlight. The shutter elements are mounted close to the glazed surface in such a manner as conform to the shape of the glazed roof and to provide an insulating barrier when fully inflated thus restricting the flow of heat through the glazed surface. When fully deflated, the reflective shutter elements can be inclined to reflect the sunlight entering at a relatively low angle of incidence in a desired direction to increase the intensity of sunlight at desired locations within the structure.

A selected number of troughs containing small plants therein are placed in a parallel relation with each other at one end of a soilless growth chamber. Tubular screw sections having helical grooves therein are employed for advancing the troughs from the loading end of the chamber to the unloading end thereof, the helical or screw pitch being considerably greater at the unloading or harvesting end in order to accommodate for the increased size of the plants as they reach maturity. In other words, the pitch of the helix is correlated with the rate at which the plants mature. Tubular screw sections having different pitches can be substituted when the growth rate differs from one species to another.

In a chamber for cultivating plant growth, a plurality of light fixtures are employed, each containing a high intensity discharge lamp. The bulb of the lamp serves as an inner transparent wall and a globe functions as an outer transparent wall. In the space between the bulb and globe water is caused to flow in order to remove unwanted radiation and heat generated by each lamp before the radiation is transmitted into the growth chamber.

Apparatus and method for controlling plant growth with artificial light

A package combination for storing and preserving a living plant such as lettuce. A bag, formed of a plastic material, is inflated with a gaseous medium. A living plant having an absorbent block attached to its root system, is placed within the bag in such a manner that the block absorbs moisture which condenses within the bag, and makes it available to the plant.

Package for perishable produce

Individual seeds are electrostatically diverted from a continuously flowing stream of seeds. Each diverted seed is pneumatically conveyed to a seed distributor which sequentially directs each seed it receives to an appropriate delivery tube leading downwardly to a series of laterally spaced dispensers beneath which is positioned a row of fibrous planting blocks. Provision is made for releasing the conveying air just above each dispenser so that for all intents and purposes the seed is gravitationally deposited on its particular planting block. The various planting blocks are arranged in rows on a tray which in turn is carried on a movable transport table. Provision is made for advancing the table row-by-row beneath the various seed dispensers so that all of the blocks in the tray receive seeds.

Precision seeder and method

An apparatus for intermittently pushing a plurality of aligned carts along a predetermined path. The apparatus includes a pair of oscillating pusher bars having a plurality of aligned lugs thereon, which engage a portion of the undersurface of the carts and push them forward as the bars move in a forward direction. As the pusher bars move in the opposite direction, the lugs disengage from the cart, so as to permit the cart to remain stationary.

An installation for continuously growing plants which includes one or more growth chambers wherein alternate periods of lightness and darkness are provided, and the environmental conditions are controlled. The plants are individually supported, and transported through the growth chambers in such a manner as to require a minimum amount of handling. A diverging track system is provided in one of the growth chambers for handling the plants in a prescribed manner and guiding them through the chamber. As the plants are moved through such chamber, increased space is automatically provided for plant growth. The installation is well suited for growing plants hydroponically.
