Provided are a polymer having low cytotoxicity and capable of imparting surface hydrophilicity and biocompatibility to medical device surfaces by simple processing, a method for producing the polymer, and a surface treatment agent for medical devices. The polymer of the present invention has a particular ratio of structural units represented by the formulae (1a) and (1b), and a particular weight average molecular weight, and is useful as a surface treatment agent for various medical devices.

Provided are amino group-containing phosphorylcholine compound and a method for production thereof, that has a highly active amino group efficiently reactive with a wide variety of functional groups and the like under mild conditions, and is capable of introducing a phosphorylcholine-like group to various substrate surfaces to provide functionalities of the group. The amino group-containing phosphorylcholine compound of the present invention is represented by at least one of formulae (1) and (1'), and may be used as a compound, or a material thereof, capable of introducing a phosphorylcholine-like group to the surface of various substrates, such as medical instruments, cosmetics materials, and medicinal substances.

The invention provides a silicone monomer which is suitable for the manufacture of ophthalmic devices, such as contact lenses, intraocular lenses, and keratoprosthesis, a monomer composition containing the monomer, and a polymer which fulfills both surface hydrophilicity and oxygen permeability at the same time. The silicone monomer of the present invention is represented by the formula (1a) or (1b): (X: a monovalent C2 to C6 organic group having one or more &#x2014;OH and optionally one O or N in its main chain; Zto Z: a C1 to C4 alkyl group; n: 1 to 3; a and b: 0 or 1).

The invention provides a silicone monomer having high purity and suitable for use in the manufacture of ophthalmic devices, and a contact lens produced from the silicone monomer as a polymerizable component. The silicone monomer is represented by the formula (1): wherein Yto Yeach independently stands for an alkyl group having 1 to 4 carbon atoms, n is an integer of 0 to 3, a and b each independently denotes an integer of 0 or 1, and R stands for a hydrogen atom or a methyl group.
