The present invention facilitates, in a two-dimensional symbol in which a region where additional data is recorded is provided in addition to a region where normal data is recorded, identification of colors of the regions where the respective data are recorded. Vertically and horizontally arranged first modules are provided, and by the coloration patterns of the first module, a finder pattern for detecting a symbol position, a timing pattern for specifying the center position of the first module, and a first recording region where first data can be recorded are formed. In at least a partial region, a second module is disposed in a portion that does not overlap the first module and includes an intermediate point between the first modules adjacent to each other, and a second recording region where second data can be recorded is formed by the coloration pattern of the second module.

Two-dimensional symbol and method for reading two-dimensional symbol

Provided is an optical code that retains compatibility with existing optical codes and is used for recording information different from the information recorded under prescribed conditions. Also provided are a method and a device for reading the optical code. The optical code includes a plurality of light color modules of a light color and a plurality of dark color modules of a dark color to record first data. At least the light color modules or the dark color modules are made up of a first module and a second module having different reflectance for light of a predetermined wavelength. An optical code is readable by a generally used reading device, and optically readable as an information code that can appropriately prevent abuse due to duplication. In this optical code, data is recorded with a pattern of a plurality of light-color modules having high visible light reflectance and a plurality of dark-color modules having visible light reflectance lower than light-color modules. At least either the light-color modules or the dark-color modules are configured to include a first module and a second module having reflectances different from each other for invisible light of a predetermined wavelength. A mail order firm receives a request for purchasing an article through Internet and the destination address. The terminal at the mail order firm converts the destination address into latitude and longitude position data to record it on an ID tag with a reader writer. The ID tag is attached to a freight containing the ordered article. A site receiving the freight reads the latitude and longitude position data to print or display the destination address in the language used by the site dealing with the freight. The deliverer can confirm that the present location where the freight is handed agrees with the latitude and longitude position data of the destination with navigating unit and GPS receiver.

An ID tag in an electronic device with a CPU and an antenna coil can communicate with the CPU through signal lines to store operation record data of the electronic device in a non-volatile memory therein. The record data is readable by a reader writer by transmission of the data with the antenna coil. A CPU including a semiconductor chip including a central processing unit portion, an ID tag portion can be used in an electronic device to store and read the operation record data. An ID tag for an electronic device has a communication circuit for communicating with a CPU for the electronic device to store operation record data of the electronic device from the CPU. The ID tag can store ticket data in a telephone to use as a ticket. The ID tags in electronic devices can record payment data for preventing illegal use.

A sheet of printing paper has an RFID tag for receiving, storing, and transmitting data through radio wave signals. A printer detects the RFID data to be written in the RFID tag in the received data and records the RFID data in the RFID tag on a sheet of printing paper in addition to the general printing operation. A copy machine can copy the RFID data from the RFID tag on the sheet of document paper to the RFID tag on the sheet of printing paper in addition to the image copying. ID data or inhibit/permission data from the RFID tag is used to control the copy operation and transmission in a facsimile. ID data is recorded on the RFID tag on the sheet of the document paper or the printing paper on copying or transmission. The RFID data is transmitted by the facsimile in addition to image data transmission.

A data code label including a QR code and an ID tag including a memory having an identification code area and a decode data writing area. A data code in the QR code showing an error in decoding is corrected and stored in the memory in the ID tag while the degree of defection of the QR code is low. When the defects advance, the error rate will increase. If the error occurs after advance of defects, the decode data in the memory is read when the error is detected. If the decode data cannot be read, the error correction is effected. If the error rate is higher than a reference, the decode data is obtained from the memory. If this decreases the error rate under the reference, the error correction is effected.

An identification tag is attached to or imbedded in each article a plurality of which are located nearby or stacked together. The identification tag wirelessly communicates with a remote controller such as a hand-held terminal to send data or receive command. Electric power to operate the identification card is also wirelessly supplied from the remote controller. The electric power is received only by a particular identification card which is communicating with the remote controller, and is turned off when the communication is completed. The electric power is then supplied to the next identification card which communicates with the remote controller. Thus, all the identification tags sequentially send data thereof one by one to the remote controller. The remote controller includes an indicator that indicates whether the communication with all the identification tags is completed, so that the remote controller can be positioned at a right place until the end of the communication.

In an optical reading apparatus having a reading sensor for converting optically readable information into an electrical signal by electronically scanning an image of optical information, such as a bar code, a detector is provided to detect the intensity of light incident on an information label on which the information is provided. Data indicative of the light intensity is used to determine a subsequent scanning period in such a manner that the scanning period of the reading sensor is shortened when the light intensity increases or vice versa. Since the decrease in the scanning period results in lower output voltage from the reading sensor, undesirable saturation in circuitry following the reading sensor is effectively prevented, providing stable operation of the reading sensor, such as a bar code reader.

The order reversing unit finally reverses the order of data and produces an output n.sub.x (x=1, . . . , Y).
