Reflective guest-host liquid-crystal display device

A hybrid type display apparatus capable of maintaining color purity in a case of transmission mode display, and improving lightness of color in a case of reflection mode display is provided. This hybrid type display apparatus is comprised of: a pair of substrates comprising a first substrate on a front side and a second substrate on a rear side, disposed in opposite directions spaced apart from each other; a first electrode provided on an internal surface of the first substrate; a second electrode provided on an internal surface of the second substrate; a color filter provided on the first substrate, aligned with a pixel in a portion between the first electrode and the second electrode spaced apart in the opposite directions from each other; a liquid crystal layer interposed between the first and the second substrates; and a reflection layer provided on the second substrate. The reflection layer has a hole provided for each pixel, which divides a plane of each pixel into a transmission portion within the hole and a reflection portion outside the hole. The color filter comprises a lamination of a colored layer and a transparent layer. The colored layer is formed thinner in the reflection portion than in the transmission layer, and the transparent layer is formed to cover a difference in level between the transmission portion and the reflection portion.

Display apparatus, a method of manufacturing the same and a color filter

A reflection type liquid crystal display device including a panel, a polarizing plate, and a 1/4 wavelength plate, with the polarizing plate and the 1/4 wavelength plate being placed upon the panel. The panel includes a transparent first substrate disposed at the external light incoming side; a second substrate opposing the first substrate, with the first substrate and the second substrate being put together so as to be separated by a predetermined distance; nematic liquid crystals kept in the gap between the substrates, with the molecules thereof having a twisted orientation; and an electrode, formed at both of the substrates, for applying a voltage to the nematic liquid crystals. When a voltage is not applied, the orientation of the molecules of the nematic liquid crystals is maintained, so that the nematic liquid crystals act together as a 1/4 wavelength layer. Therefore, the nematic liquid crystals cooperate with the polarizing plate and the 1/4 wavelength plate in order to pass external light and produce a white display. On the other hand, when a voltage is applied, the orientation of the molecules of the nematic liquid crystals is changed to a substantially vertical orientation, so that the nematic liquid crystals lose their ability to act together as a 1/4 wavelength layer.

Reflection type liquid crystal display device

The orientation of a reflection type liquid crystal display device is improved to widen the field angle. A panel is provided with a transparent first substrate located on the external light incident side, a second substrate located on the opposite side bonded to the first substrate with interposition of a predetermined space, a twist-oriented nematic liquid crystal layer supported in the space between both substrates, and electrodes for applying a voltage to the nematic liquid crystal layer formed on both substrates. The nematic liquid crystal layer remains in twist orientation and functions as a quarter wavelength layer to allow the external light to pass in cooperation with the deflection plate and the quarter wavelength plate for displaying white while no voltage is applied. On the other hands the nematic liquid crystal layer is converted to perpendicular orientation and loses the function of a quarter wavelength layer not to allow the external light to pass for displaying black. The orientation direction 3U of nematic liquid crystal molecules which are in contact with the first substrate is prescribed in a range of 168.5.+-.10 degrees with respect to the upward direction of the screen of the panel, and the orientation direction 3L of nematic liquid crystal molecules which are in contact with the second substrate is prescribed in a range of 51.5.+-.10 degrees.

A color reflective guest-host liquid-crystal display device is provided which does not require a polarizing plate and which has a bright screen. A transparent electrode is formed on an upper substrate of a color reflective guest-host liquid-crystal display device. A reflection electrode is formed on a lower substrate, and an electro-optic element is held in the spacing between the two substrates so as to perform light modulation in response to an applied voltage. The electro-optic element has a laminated structure including a guest-host liquid-crystal layer which contains a dichroic dye and which is uniformly oriented along the transparent electrode, and a phase shifter which has a predetermined optical anisotropic axis and which is formed along the reflection electrode. The transparent electrode and the reflection electrode face each other and define a plurality of pixels. A color filter assigns incident light of a different wavelength to each pixel. The phase shifter is divided for each pixel, and the thickness thereof is adjusted according to a corresponding wavelength. Further, when this liquid-crystal display device is formed into an active matrix type, the pixel aperture ratio can be improved by providing the color filter on the drive substrate side on which switching elements and pixel electrodes are formed rather than on the facing substrate.

A reflective guest-host liquid-crystal display includes: a pair of upper and lower substrates joined together with a predetermined space therebetween; and a guest-host liquid-crystal layer which is held within the space and contains a dichroic dye. The upper substrate is provided with at least a counter electrode. At least thin-film transistors (TFTs), a reflective layer, a .lambda./4 phase shifter (quarter-wavelength plate), and pixel electrodes are formed on the lower substrate. The .lambda./4 phase shifter is formed above the TFTs and the reflective layer, and has contact holes connecting to the drain electrodes of the TFTs. The pixel electrodes are patterned on the .lambda./4 phase shifter and connected to the corresponding drain electrodes of the TFTs through the corresponding contact holes.
