A disk array apparatus with a number of storage units aims at application of new control firmware to the storage units. The disk array apparatus includes a controlling unit controlling the storage units, which controlling unit includes a storing section storing control firmware to be applied; a monitoring section for monitoring a state of access to each storage unit to which the control firmware is to be applied; and an application instructing section instructing, on the basis of the result of the monitoring by the monitoring section, each the first storage unit to apply the first control firmware. In response to the instructing by the application instructing section, the control firmware is applied to each the storage unit.

A magnetic disk array apparatus has a function of positively verifying read data with a configuration by which overhead can be reduced as much as possible. Upon writing data to each magnetic disk-I, verification, such as CRC data, is additionally written for each writing block, and also, in a disk array controller, the same CRC data is held (see FIG.).

In a storage system, a disk device performs recovery and transfers read data to a control device, and the control device judges the validity of the recovery to prevent a transfer of erroneous data. A control device read-accesses a disk device, and the disk device returns read data and a recovered read error response. A control device, at the time of an initial recovered read error, performs a retry of a similar command, and if an error does not occur for read commands including the retry read command, judges the data to be valid. Uncertain data (suspect data) upon occurrence of a recovered read error is restored through disk retry, and accurate read data can be transferred to the host.

A protection data control unit is provided for a cache control unit. In the writing operation to write user data from an upper apparatus into a cache memory, protection data is formed on a data block unit basis of the user data and written into the cache memory. When the interruption of the transfer of the data block is detected during the writing into the cache memory, a forming state of the protection data upon interruption is stored in the cache memory. When the transfer restart of the data block is detected after the interruption, the forming state is returned to the forming state of the protection data upon interruption stored in the cache memory and the formation of the protection data is restarted.
