In a starter with a planetary gear speed reduction mechanism, a first output shaft retaining member (retaining member 10, washer 20) and a second output shaft retaining member (pinion retaining ring 250) are mounted on an output shaft 220 in such a manner as to sandwich from axially front and rear directions a bearing support portion of a housing 400 which supports one end of the output shaft 220, so that a thrust load in the frontward and rearward directions of the output shaft 220 is received at the front and rear end faces of the bearing support portion of the housing 400. Therefore, the axially rearward movement of the output shaft 220 is regulated assuredly without regulating it by the rear end face of the center bracket 360 and the mortor partition wall 800, thereby preventing deformation of the center bracket.

Starter with planetary gear speed reduction mechanism

In a one way clutch of a starter having an outer member, inner member and rollers, a planet carrier is formed integrally with the outer member and through holes are formed avoiding cam chambers for rollers so as not to interfere with cam chambers formed in the inner circumferential surface of outer member. At one end portion of outer member, limiting portion for limiting the axial shifting of rollers is integrally formed, and at the other end surface, a limiting plate for limiting the axial shifting of rollers is provided and press-fitted into pins. The limiting portion may be replaced by another limiting plate. Through holes for the through holes are formed at locations where the outer member is radially thick, e.g., between circumferentially adjacent two of the cam chambers.

Starter with improved one-way clutch structure

A pinion moving member on an output shaft is pushed forward by a pinion pushing member such as a lever which is driven by a plunger of an electromagnet switch. After a pinion gear of the pinion moving member abuts a ring gear, reaction force is stored in a spring as the plunger of the electromagnet switch moves further. When the pinion gear comes into meshing engagement with the ring gear by the reaction force of the spring, a retreat restricting member restricts retreat of the pinion moving member. The retreat restricting member are provided separately from the pinion pushing member so that the the pinion pushing member driven by the electromagnet switch need not restrict the retreat of the pinion moving member.

Starter with improved pinion drive and return structure

An electric rotating machine and manufacturing method of the same is provided that can securely press-fit magnetic poles against an inner circumference of a yoke with a cylindrical body. By directly contacting a first and second end portions of the cylindrical body and moving the same relatively, the diameter of the cylindrical body widens in the outer radial direction to press-fit the magnetic poles against the inner circumference of the yoke. Thus, the variation of the inner diameter of the magnetic poles that occurs due to the dimensional error in permanent magnet thickness and inner diameter of the yoke is absorbed by the relative movement of the first and second end portions. This stabilizes the fixing force of the magnet, and allows the magnet to be securely fixed to the yoke without excessive stress on the cylindrical body. Furthermore, the displacement of the magnetic poles can be restricted by bending axial ends of the cylindrical body radially outwardly.

Method of manufacturing an electric rotating machine

In a starter having a pinion gear on an output shaft driven by a starter motor, a magnet switch, and a shift lever pivotally connecting the pinion and the magnet switch, the shift lever is formed at one end thereof with an annular arm body for engagement with the pinion gear. The annular arm body is engaged with the pinion gear to receive the pinion returning force evenly thereby to prevent damage on the shift lever. Preferably the annular arm body is engaged with the pinion gear through a plate and a bearing.

Starter having improved pinion driving mechanism

An output shaft is arranged coaxially with an armature shaft forwardly of a starter motor, and an electromagnetic switch is arranged at the rear of the starter motor. The output shaft and the armature shaft are independently supported by a first to fourth bearings. The first and second bearings are held on a housing and a center case. In the starter motor, a face type commutator is provided on the rear end of the armature, so that the axial length of the armature shaft is set short. The third and fourth bearings are held on a partition wall of a yoke of the starter motor and a holder, respectively.

Starter with high vibration resistance construction

In a one-way clutch used in a starter for engines, a locking concave for locking a roller thereto is formed on a roller-moving surface of one clutch member having a peripheral surface facing a peripheral surface of the other clutch member having a wedge-shaped groove for accommodating the roller. A resilient member for disengaging the roller from the locking concave at the time of overrunning is accommodated in an annular groove, thus urging the roller radially outwardly. The roller is prevented from colliding with the locking concave at the time of overrunning so that vibrations and noise are not generated.

One-way clutch with resilient ring and starter using the same

A starter which reduces the number of parts for a pinion rotation regulation and provides an accurate magnet switch operation. A concave portion is formed on the bottom side of a plunger to store a spherical body set on the rear end of a cord-shaped member, e.g., wire. A male screw and a fixing are used so that the length of the cord-shaped member is adjusted thereby. The length of the string-shaped member is adjusted so that the claw of the pinion rotation regulating member fits into the notch on the outer circumference of a pinion gear. Furthermore, the claw is fit into the notch via the wire when the plunger moves. The cord-shaped member may be replaced by a rod member disposed radially inside or outside the yoke.

Starter

In a starter, one end of a spring is connected with a pinion, whereas the other end of the spring is connected with an annular plate. A regulation claw of a regulation member for moving the pinion toward a ring gear is made separate from the spring which is flexed in the rotational direction of an output shaft so as to engage the pinion with the ring gear, when the pinion is brought into contact with the ring gear. Thus, appropriate setting of the specification of the regulation claw of the regulation member and that of the spring can be very easily accomplished. Further, because the specification of the spring can be independently appropriately set without difficulty, the spring is made more durable.

Starter with pinion regulating claw and spring

Rotation of a pinion is regulated by a pinion regulating claw when a starter is actuated. After the pinion engages a ring gear, the regulating claw positioned rearward the pinion regulates the return of the pinion from the ring gear. A thrust bearing including a rolling bearing positioned on the rear face of the pinion absorbs the difference between the rotational speed of the pinion and that of the regulating claw. Such a construction allows only the pinion to move axially and a magnet switch to be made compact and light.

A rotor 2 has a rotary shaft 20. A drive shaft 7 is provided around an outer periphery of rotary shaft 20 and is rotatably supported on a housing. Drive shaft 7 has the same axial center as rotary shaft 20, and has a pinion gear 7b meshing with a ring gear 8 of an engine. A speed-reduction mechanism 4 includes a sun gear 2b provided on rotary shaft 20, a planetary gear 4b meshing with sun gear 2b, and an internal gear 4a meshing with planetary gear 4b. A reduction shaft 5 receives a rotational torque transmitted from rotor 2 through speed-reduction mechanism 4. A first one-way clutch 6b is interposed between reduction shaft 5 and drive shaft 7 for connecting reduction shaft 5 to drive shaft 7 only when any rotational torque is transmitted from reduction shaft 5 to drive shaft 7. A second one-way clutch 6a is interposed between drive shaft 7 and rotary shaft 20 for connecting drive shaft 7 to rotary shaft 20 only when any rotational torque is transmitted, from drive shaft 7 to rotary shaft 20. In a start-up operation of the engine, rotation of rotor 2 is reduced through speed-reduction mechanism 4 and is transmitted through reduction shaft 5, first one-way clutch 6b and drive shaft 7 to ring gear 8 to drive the engine. After succeeding the start-up operation, rotation of ring gear 8 is transmitted through drive shaft 7 and second one-way clutch 6a to rotary shaft 20 of rotor 2 to generate electric power.

Combined starter and generator apparatus

Around the outer circumference of an armature core 520, there are arranged a stator core 558 and a stator coil 559 wound on the stator core 558, forming a fixed magnetic field device. The stator coil 559 has its one end portion arranged in the space at the outer circumference of a planetary gear speed reduction mechanism 300, i.e., at the outer circumference of a center bracket 360. A motor partition 800 is formed with a stepped portion 810 so as to accommodate the aforementioned one end portion. On the other hand, the other end of the stator coil 559 is arranged in the space at the outer circumference of a brush 910. In short, the planetary gear speed reduction mechanism 300 has its external diameter made smaller than the inner circumferential diameter of the stator coil 559.

An attracting coil is directly wound on a non-magnetic heat-conductive sleeve and a plunger contacts the sleeve in a starter. An influence of heat generated through current flow to a motor and heat generated at the attracting coil through current flow to the attracting coil itself are transmitted and released from the attracting coil directly to the plunger. Therefore, decline of the attracting force of the attracting coil is prevented. A magnet switch is provided in the vicinity of the opposite end of a pinion of the motor. Thus, when the starter is mounted on an engine, the starter does not interfere with the engine and the mounting work is facilitated.

Starter having magnet switch with heat dissipation characteristics

In a starter motor for a starter, a plurality of permanent magnets are arranged circumferentially inside a cylindrical yoke and outside an armature. A cylindrical sleeve is fitted with the permanent magnets to radially outwardly fix the permanent magnets to the yoke. A discharge hole for discharging a cooling air from the inside to the outside of the motor is formed on the bottom of the yoke at a position between the adjacent two of the permanent magnets. The sleeve restricts the splash water from entering directly inside the motor through the discharge hole.
