A flowcell for containing sample solutions is surrounded by an electric heater which is then surrounded by an isothermal frame having a large heat capacity, and a Peltier element serving as a cooling source is coupled with the isothermal frame. A heat delaying plate is arranged between the flowcell and heater and a temperature sensor is arranged between the flowcell and the heat delaying plate. The Peltier element is controlled in such a manner that the temperature of the isothermal frame is maintained substantially at a constant temperature lower than a predetermined temperature at which the sample solution is to be kept. The heater is controlled in accordance with a difference between the temperature of the sample solution and the predetermined temperature.

An apparatus for measuring ion activities comprising an electrode assembly, a sample cup, a mechanism for moving up and down said electrode assembly, a pipette for injecting a sample fluid and a system for injecting a reference solution, and so operating as to inject a sample fluid into said sample cup with the pipette for injecting sample fluid, move up and down said electrode assembly for assuring intimate contact between said electrode assembly and said sample fluid, measure ion activities in said sample fluid, inject a reference solution through said reference solution injecting system, wash said electrode assembly, discard the reference solution used for washing, inject the reference solution once again, measure ion activities in said reference solution and determine correct ion activities in said sample fluid on the basis of the levels of ion activities measured in said sample solution and those measured in said reference solution.

A liquid sample distributor comprises a sample transfer tube having a nozzle at one end for suction and discharge of a sample, a first switchable valve located intermediate the length of the sample transfer tube, a first sample suction pump and a second sample discharge pump located on the opposite sides of the first switchable valve and connected with the sample transfer tube, a second switchable valve connected with the other end of the transfer tube, and a rinsing water vessel connected with the transfer tube through the second switchable valve. The displacement of the second pump is equal to the quantity of a liquid sample to be distributed while the displacement of the first pump is greater than the given quantity of the liquid sample. A liquid sample is initially suctioned into the nozzle by the first pump in a quantity which is greater than the given quantity to be distributed, and the given quantity thereof is discharged through the second pump for purposes of distribution. Subsequently, the remaining quantity of the liquid sample is discharged by the first pump so as to be discarded. In this manner, a variation in the quantity and the concentration of the liquid sample being distributed is avoided, assuring a smooth distributing operation.

An automatic chemical analyzer includes a rotary disc which is intermittently driven for rotation in a given direction and which is provided with a plurality of holders, each of which receives a reaction tube therein. The reaction tubes are disposed to move through an annular channel of a thermostat liquid vessel which maintains first reagent and a liquid sample to be examined, both injected into a reaction tube, at a given temperature. Second reagent is heated to a predetermined temperature before it is injected into the reaction tube. After the injection, the liquids are agitated to mix them together, and the resulting reaction solution is then subject to a colorimetric determination by an optical measuring instrument. Subsequently, the reaction solution is discarded, and rinse water which is previously heated to a given temperature is supplied to the tube for cleaning it.
