Each picture element includes first and second sub-picture elements, each of which includes a liquid crystal capacitor and at least one storage capacitor. After a display voltage representing a certain grayscale level has been applied to the respective sub-picture element electrodes of the first and second sub-picture elements, a voltage difference &#x394;V&#x3b1; is produced between voltages to be applied to the respective liquid crystal capacitors of the first and second sub-picture elements by way of their associated storage capacitor(s). By setting the voltage difference &#x394;V&#x3b1; value of the blue and/or cyan picture element(s) to be smaller than that of the other color picture elements, shift toward the yellow range at an oblique viewing angle can be minimized.

In an active-matrix liquid crystal display device, each of multiple pixels includes a first sub-pixel and a second sub-pixel, through which different voltages are applicable to a portion of the liquid crystal layer. Each of the first and second sub-pixels includes a liquid crystal capacitor defined by a counter electrode and a sub-pixel electrode that faces the counter electrode by way of the liquid crystal layer, and a storage capacitor defined by a storage capacitor electrode, an insulating layer, and a storage capacitor counter electrode. The storage capacitor electrode is electrically connected to the sub-pixel electrode, and the storage capacitor counter electrode faces the storage capacitor electrode by way of the insulating layer. The counter electrode is shared by the first and second sub-pixels and the storage capacitor counter electrodes of the first and second sub-pixels are electrically independent of each other.

Liquid crystal display device

An active element substrate and an opposed substrate sandwich a liquid crystal layer to constitute a liquid crystal display device. On the active element substrate, two signal lines respectively charge a pair of pixels that are adjacent to each other in a direction parallel to scanning lines. The two signal lines are provided intensively on a pixel electrode of one of the pair of pixels. In the direction parallel to the scanning lines, a pixel electrode on which signal lines are provided, and a pixel electrode on which signal lines are not provided, are arrayed alternately. This arrangement makes it possible to reduce, while ensuring a wide process margin, the fluctuation of the potential of a terminal to be connected to a pixel electrode (the fluctuation of the potential occurs during OFF-period of an active element due to capacitances respectively provided at superimposed portions of signal lines and a pixel electrode), to simplify the arrangement of signal lines, and to improve the aperture ratio.

An active-matrix substrate includes first and second trunk lines which are arranged so as to be spaced apart from, but adjacent to, each other and are supplied with signals electrically independently. First and second groups of lines include portions that are substantially parallel to each other. A first group of connecting pads for the first trunk line is located near the second trunk line such that each line of the first group is electrically connected to the first trunk line at an associated one of the connecting pads belonging to the first group near the second trunk line. A second group of connecting pads for the second trunk line is provided near the first trunk line such that each line of the second group is electrically connected to the second trunk line at an associated one of the connecting pads of the second group near the first trunk line.

Active-matrix substrate and display device

On a termination side of each scanning line is provided a charging switching element and a discharging switching element in parallel with each other, the charging switching element having a gate electrode which is connected with one end of a scanning auxiliary line, the other end of which is connected to a scanning line of the same stage, the discharging switching element having a gate electrode which is connected with one end of a scanning auxiliary line, the other end of which is connected to a scanning line of the following stage. Further, the charging switching element has a source/drain electrode which is connected to a scanning line and a selected state scanning driving voltage power source, whereas the discharging switching element has a source/drain electrode which is connected to a scanning line and the non-selected state scanning driving voltage power source, thereby allowing an image display device of the present invention to suppress the dull waveform of a driving voltage at both rise and fall, and prevent erroneous writing without reducing effective writing time.

Image display device

A reflective liquid crystal display device is provided in which, on one of a pair of substrates opposed to each other with a liquid crystal layer interposed therebetween, data signal lines and scanning signal lines are provided so as to cross each other, thin film transistors are provided so as to be electrically connected to the data signal lines and the scanning signal lines, reflective pixel electrodes are provided on an interlayer insulator formed so as to cover at least a part of the data signal lines, the scanning signal lines, or the thin film transistors, and the reflective pixel electrodes are electrically connected to drain electrodes of the thin film transistors, wherein an underlying film is disposed in contact with the interlayer insulator, the underlying film uniforming heat conduction and/or light transmittance between the interlayer insulator and the one of the substrates and/or contact properties of the interlayer insulator with respect to the one of the substrates in a region where at least one of the reflective pixel electrodes is formed.

Reflective liquid crystal display device

A projection image display device includes, a light source, an image display panel having a number of pixels and a vertical scanning function, an optical system for dividing light from the light source into a plurality of lights of different wave ranges and directing and overlapping the divided plural lights onto an area from different directions, a light-collector for collecting each of the plural divided lights directed onto the area by the optical system into apertures of pixels of the image display panel corresponding to the wave range of the light, a projector for projecting an image displayed on the image display panel, and a color-changer for mutually changing, at every vertical scanning of the image display panel, the directions in which the optical system directs the plural divided lights of the different wave ranges, so as to mutually change the wave ranges of light directed to the pixels of the image display panel sequentially. The image display panel displays an image with each of the pixels displaying a color of the wave range of light directed to the pixel at every change by the color-changer.
