A glass panel for a cathode ray tube comprises a substantially rectangular face portion on which images are displayed and a skirt portion continuous to the face portion through a blend R portion. An effective screen size of the face portion in a diagonal direction is 500 mm or more, an average radius of curvature of an outer surface of the face portion is 10000 mm or more in all radial directions from a face center portion, and a difference in height between the face center portion and an edge portion of the effective screen in the diagonal direction on an inner surface of the face portion is in a range from 9 mm to 17 mm.

A panel glass of a color cathode ray tube exhibiting a high absorption of X-radiation and an excellent resistance to electron and/or X-ray browning, which is modified by 0.1-5.0 wt % Nd.sub.2 0.sub.3 to provide substantially higher relative light transmission in the green and in the red wavelengths of the visible spectrum and a greater selective light absorption in the yellow region of the spectrum, and which is further modified by 0.0005-0.05 wt % Cr.sub.2 O.sub.3 and 0-2 wt % Pr.sub.6 O.sub.11 to control the chromaticity value of the glass to be nearly equal to that of the light emitted from tricolor phosphor P22 and to suppress the dichroism of the glass for different ambient lights. Ingredients of the glass are as follows: 50-75% SiO.sub.2, 0-5% Al.sub.2 O.sub.3, 0-4% CaO, 0-3% MgO, 0-13% SrO, 0-16% BaO, 0-3% PbO, O-3% ZnO, 0-4% ZrO.sub.2, the sum of SrO+BaO+PbO+ZnO+ZrO.sub.2 being 5-25%, 0-4% Li.sub.2 O, 3-15% Na.sub.2 O, 2-15% K.sub.2 O, the sum of Na.sub.2 O+K.sub.2 O being 5-20%, O-2%, TiO.sub.2, O-3% CeO.sub.2, 0.1-5.0% Nd.sub.2 O.sub.3, 0.0005-0.05% Cr.sub.2 O.sub.3, and 0-2% Pr.sub.6 O.sub.11.

In a plurality of monochromatic colored light emitted cathode ray tubes arranged in a surface to form a huge screen for displaying a colored picture, glass for use in light-source cathode ray tubes for emitting the red or the blue light has the optical characteristics that it can well pass the light in the wavelength range of the remaining blue and yellow portions of the spectrum to thereby improve contrast of the monochromatic colored red or green light source cathode ray tube. The glass essentially consists, by weight, of 50-75% SiO.sub.2, O-5% Al.sub.2 O.sub.3, 0-4% CaO, 0-2% MgO, 0-12% SrO, 0-16% BaO, 0-3% PbO, 0-3% ZnO, 0-3% ZrO.sub.2, the sum of SrO+BaO+PbO+ZnO+ZrO.sub.2 being 1.5-25%, 0-4% Li.sub.2 O, 3-15% Na.sub.2 O, 1-10% K.sub.2 O, the sum of Li.sub.2 O+Na.sub.2 O+K.sub.2 O being 5-24%, 0-2% TiO.sub.2, 0.1-3% CeO.sub.2, 1-10% Nd.sub.2 O.sub.3, 0.5-5% Pr.sub.2 O.sub.3, and 0.1-4% Fe.sub.2 O.sub.3. According to the glass, the red light emitting cathode ray tube and the green light emitting cathode ray tube are produced only by a simple kind of glass without sacrificing contrast characteristic of the light-source cathode ray tubes emitting red light and green light, respectively. Thus, the red light emitting and the green light emitting cathode ray tubes using the glass are used together with the blue light emitting cathode ray tube to form a huge screen with a reduced cost and without pollution.
