Sample container and method for producing the same

A multi-layer metal-ceramic material including an alumina layer and a metallic layer including an Mg-containing alloy. The alumina layer and metallic layer are bonded together via a reaction layer including MgAl.sub.2 O.sub.4 spinel. The alumina and metallic layers are pressed together and heated to a temperature below the solidus of the Mg-containing alloy, whereby the Mg migrates through the metallic layer to the interface and reacts with the alumina layer to form the spinel reaction layer. The bonded interface is excellent in resistance to Na attack.

A method for increasing the oxidation resistance of a Fe-Cr-Al alloy, which comprises placing said Fe-Cr-Al alloy in an atmosphere having an oxygen partial atmosphere of 0.02-2 Pa at a temperature of 950.degree.-1,200.degree. C. to form, on the surface of said alloy, an alumina-based protective film having excellent oxidation resistance. Said method enables the formation of a homogeneous protective film having excellent oxidation resistance, even on alloys having non-homogeneous compositions, such as Fe-Cr-Al alloy and the like, and is very effective for increasing the oxidation resistance of Fe-Cr-Al alloy.

A honeycomb structure having a periphery and two ends, including a plurality of passages which are defined by partition walls and extend in an axial direction between the ends, wherein the partition walls are formed of a plurality of through holes for forming turbulent flow so that the fluid pass through the through holes from one of the passages to the adjacent passage, each of the through holes having an open area of at least 0.25 mm.sup.2, thereby a stream of the fluid passing through the honeycomb structure is efficiently mixed to increase its contact with a catalyst composition coated on a surface of the partition walls. The honeycomb structure may have a corrugated thin metal foil. Alternatively, the honeycomb structure may have a unitary structure formed by sintering an extruded body comprising a powder material. A heater for heating fluid flowing therethrough, has the honeycomb structure being electrically conductive and an electrode for applying electric current to the honeycomb structure so as to generate heat.

A shaped material comprising powders of alloys containing easily oxidizable elements is fired in a hydrogen-based atmosphere containing at least one hydrocarbon gas in a total amount of 0.01-5.0 volume %. Therefore, the amount of oxides formed on the surfaces of material powder particles is reduced, and the sinterability of powder particle surfaces is improved owing to the sticking of atomic carbon thereto and thereby the mutual diffusion of powder particles becomes easy. As a result, there can be obtained a sintered alloy of desired density, superior in oxidation resistance, etc.

Process for firing alloys containing easily oxidizable elements

A method for treating sintered alloy is disclosed by exposing a portion of the sintered alloy at a temperature ranging from about 800.degree. C. to about 1300.degree. C. under an atmosphere that contains an amount of water vapor corresponding to dew points ranging from about 30.degree. C. to about 60.degree. C. The method according to the present invention gives sintered alloy with a satisfactory protective layer that excels in smoothness and uniformity, and that prevents abnormal oxidation. Moreover, the method is especially useful to a sintered alloy having a complex structure and/or thin walls, such as a honeycomb structure.

A honeycomb monolith heater including a honeycomb structure having a plurality of passages of square or rectangular cross-sectional shape and a plurality of electrode plates fixed to the outer wall of the honeycomb structure, in which the electrode plates are arranged so that the angle formed by the electrode plates and the passage walls is an acute angle. A metal-ceramic joined, composite body comprises a metallic member and a ceramic member. The metallic member and the ceramic member are provided with a recess and a projection, respectively, and are integrally joined by inserting the projection into the recess. The recess of the metallic member is provided with a stepped portion to increase an inner diameter of the recess at an opening portion thereof, and a brazing metal is interposed at least in a gap between the stepped portion and the projection of the ceramic member. Alternatively, a groove is provided over substantially the entire periphery of the projection of the ceramic member in vicinity of an end of a joined portion between the metallic member and the ceramic member, and a brazing metal is interposed at least between an edge of the groove and the recess of the metallic member. Besides the above, the axial length L.sub.2 of the joined portion and the diameter D of the projection may be set to satisfy the following relationship: ##EQU1##

At least a surface portion of a backflow-preventing valve which is brought into contact with a material to be injected and a screw groove or a valve seat is constituted by a ceramic material.

Composite bodies comprise a metallic member and a ceramic member integrally joined together by joining a projection of the ceramic member to a recess of the metallic member. Their joining strength is improved by substantially limiting brazing metal to an interface between the outer peripheral surface of the projection of the ceramic member and the innner peripheral surface of the recess of the metallic member. The joining strength is also improved by forming a groove around the outer periphery of the metallic member at the joined end. The joining strength is also improved by providing a space or an intermediate member between a tip end surface of the projection and a bottom surface of the recess and attaining the relation: ##EQU1## in which G, L.sub.1, .alpha., .alpha.', T.sub.S and T.sub.R are the thickness of the space or the intermediate member, a distance from the bottom surface of the recess of the metallic member to the joining end, a coefficient of thermal expansion of the metallic member, a coefficient of thermal expansion of the ceramic member, a solidifying temperature of the brazing metal, and room temperature, respectively. The joining strength is also improved by radially enlarging the recess near the opening and thinning the brazing metal toward the opening of the recess.

Active brazing metals that can joint ceramic members mutually or a ceramic member and a metallic member to each other with high joint strength and improved availability can be provided in various shapes such as plate or wire, even when a metal of poor ductility is used as a raw material of the brazing metals.
