A piston for an internal combustion engine, including a piston crown having a central axis, and a piston bowl disposed in the piston crown, on which two tumble flows of air are provided. The piston bowl has a generally V-shaped contour in section taken along a vertical plane intersecting the tumble flows, on which the two tumble flows are retained at an inclined state toward a central axis of the piston crown.

A direct injection spark-ignited internal combustion engine according to the present invention has a fuel injection valve that injects fuel directly into a fuel combustion chamber and is provided to a cylinder head, a fuel injection valve gasket that is inserted between the cylinder head and the fuel injection valve, and a water hole that is formed in a cylinder head gasket near the fuel injection valve gasket. The fuel injection valve is cooled through a seal portion of the fuel injection valve gasket, by cooling water in contact with the bottom surface of the cylinder head through the water hole.

An internal combustion gasoline engine has an air intake assembly which injects air through the cylinder head into the cylinder to generate swirl (horizontal vortex) flow (as opposed to tumble (vertical vortex) flow) for stratified charge combustion, and to generate tumble flow for homogeneous charge combustion. The piston includes a cavity combustion chamber at the top surface of the piston, the cavity combustion chamber having an increasing cross sectional area as the top of the piston is approached.

In a cylinder head of a fuel direct injection spark ignition type internal combustion engine, there extend a pair of intake ports to a combustion chamber. The intake ports are arranged to decrease a distance therebetween as nearing the combustion chamber. An axial center line of each intake port is inclined by an angle &ldquo;&thgr;&rdquo; relative to an imaginary plane which includes a center line of an associated piston and is perpendicular to an axial line of an associated crankshaft. The angle &ldquo;&thgr;&rdquo; satisfies the inequality of &ldquo;&thgr;&deg;<&thgr;&lE;15&deg;&rdquo;. If desired, the imaginary plane may be replaced with another imaginary plane which includes a center line of an associated fuel injector and extends in parallel with the center line of the associated piston.

Fuel direct injection spark ignition type internal combustion engine

In an arrangement for a spark-igniting direct-injection internal combustion engine, a division of X by B (X/B) (B denotes a cylinder bore diameter of each cylinder and X denotes a distance from a fuel injection nozzle up to a center axial line of the corresponding cylinder) ranges from 0.38 to 0.46. A division of Y by B (Y/B) ranges from 0.4 to 0.5 (wherein Y denotes a distance from a line passing through a spark-ignition portion of a spark plug up to an injection nozzle of the fuel injection valve. A division of Z by B (Z/B) ranges from 0.2 to 0.3 (wherein Z denotes a distance from the nozzle of the fuel injection valve up to a center of the intake valve).

Piston for cylinder direct injection spark ignition internal combustion

An internal combustion gasoline engine has an air intake assembly which introduces air through the cylinder head into the cylinder to generate swirl (horizontal vortex) flow (as opposed to tumble (vertical vortex) flow) for stratified charge combustion, and to generate tumble flow for homogeneous charge combustion. The piston includes a cavity combustion chamber at the top surface of the piston, the cavity combustion chamber having a round shape and an increasing cross sectional area as the top of the piston is approached. During stratified charge combustion, swirl flow is smoothly guided into the cavity combustion chamber and preserved with a sufficient intensity since the cavity combustion chamber is well sealed at its whole periphery. During homogeneous charge combustion, a tumble flow is formed inside the cylinder, and fuel injection is made in the intake stroke. Fuel supplied into the cavity combustion chamber is easily washed away by the tumble stream. Valve recesses may also be provided at the top of the piston.

A direct-injection spark-ignition engine having engine cylinders bored in a cylinder block, and a cylinder head mounted on the cylinder block, comprises at least one intake port provided for each of the engine cylinders. The ratio V/A of a stroke volume V (cm.sup.3) per cylinder to a cross-sectional area A (cm.sup.2) is set within a predetermined range defined by 45.ltoreq.V/A.ltoreq.55, where the cross-sectional area A is a minimum cross-sectional area obtained when the at least one intake port is cut by a plane extending in a direction substantially normal to a stream line of intake air flowing through the intake port.

Direct-injection spark-ignition engine

A cylinder direct injection spark-ignition internal combustion engine. The engine comprises a cylinder block having a plurality of cylinders. A cylinder head is fixedly mounted on a block deck of the cylinder block. The cylinder head has an intake port for each cylinder. The intake port has first and second sections which are contiguous with each other. The first section is located downstream of the second section relative to the flow of intake air. The first and second sections have respectively first and second axes. The first and second axes incline relative to a bottom flat surface of the cylinder head respectively to form first and second angles, in which the first angle is smaller than the second angle. A fuel injector valve is provided to directly inject fuel into a combustion chamber formed corresponding to each cylinder. The fuel injector valve is located close to the intake port and disposed closer to a periphery of the combustion chamber than a downstream end of the intake port. A spark plug is provided in such a manner that its tip end section is projected into the combustion chamber.

Internal combustion engine

An internal combustion engine comprises a cylinder block including a front wall, and a chain cover attached to the front wall. Coolant passage walls defining a coolant passage are integrated with the front wall of the cylinder block and the chain cover, respectively. Heat insulating means are arranged to prevent a contact of lubricating oil and blow-by gas with the coolant passage walls.

In an engine having a camshaft mounted on a cylinder head via plural camshaft supporting portions; a camshaft sprocket coaxially coupled to the camshaft; an idler sprocket rotatably supported between the camshaft and the crankshaft on the cylinder head; a first chain reeved around the crankshaft and the idler sprocket; and a second chain reeved around the idler sprocket and the camshaft sprocket, an oil jet hole is formed in the frontmost camshaft supporting portion in communication with a main oil passage via an annular oil groove formed in the camshaft and an inclined oil groove formed in the cylinder head, so that lubricant can be sufficiently jetted from the oil jet hole to the second chain located near the frontmost camshaft supporting member, without use of an additional oil jet pipe member.

Lubrication device for engine

A cylinder head for an overhead camshaft engine comprises an end wall to which an idler is rotatably mounted, and two side walls which extend in generally parallel from the end wall. Upper and lower beams interconnect and extend between the two side walls. The side walls, and the upper and lower beams cooperate with each other to define a mounting site extending to surround a window opening. A cover is detachably mounted on the mounting site to conceal the window opening.

Cylinder head for overhead camshaft engine

A camshaft driving arrangement for an internal combustion engine comprises a cylinder head formed with a cam chamber, and an idler chamber communicating with an oil pan and an end face of the cylinder head. The end face includes openings allowing communication between the cam chamber and the idler chamber. An idler shank is fixedly mounted on the cylinder head. An idler sprocket is rotatably supported on the idler shank, and includes a radial portion disposed adjacent the end face. The end face, the radial portion, and the idler shank cooperate with each other to define a passage allowing oil flowing out of the cam chamber via the openings to flow down toward the oil pan.

Camshaft driving arrangement for internal combustion engine

A double overhead camshaft engine having two camshafts rotatably supported by a cylinder head. This two camshafts are drivably connected through an idler gear with a crankshaft of the engine by means of drive chains. The idler gear is rotatably mounted on an idler gear installation bolt which is fixedly secured only to a front end section of the cylinder head in a so-called cantilever arrangement. A surrounding wall structure for the idler gear is formed integral with the front end section of the cylinder head and extends in the direction of axis of the idler gear over the idler gear to form a front end section. An opening is formed at the surrounding wall structrure front end section and located on an opposite side of the cylinder head front end section with respect to the idler gear. The opening is closed with a cover which is disposed spaced from the idler gear installation bolt, so that no connection is made to the idler gear and the installation bolt therefor.
