A method for obtaining glutaric acid, succinic acid, and adipic acid from an acid mixture obtained as a by-product in the industry and comprising glutaric acid, succinic acid and adipic acid, which comprises the steps of: (1) contacting the acid mixture with urea of 1 to 2 moles per mole of the acid mixture, in solution, to deposit a urea-glutaric acid adduct so that the weight ratio of glutaric acid remaining in the solution to succinic acid is 1.2 or less when the adipic acid content is in the range of 0% by weight to 7% by weight and 1.4 or less when the adipic acid content is larger than 7% by weight and 30% by weight or less; separating the deposited urea-glutaric acid adduct out of the solution; (2) adding further urea to the solution and/or concentrating the solution obtained in the step (1) to deposit a urea-succinic acid adduct; separating the deposited urea-succinic acid adduct out of the solution; and (3) decomposing the separated urea-dicarboxylic acid adducts each into respective dicarboxylic acids and urea. With this method, the mixture comprising glutaric acid, succinic acid and adipic acid can, for the first time, be successfully and effectively separated into the respective components.

1,4-Diacyloxybutene-2 is produced with a high yield by reacting 1,3-butadiene with a carboxylic acid, for example, acetic acid, and molecular oxygen in the presence of a catalyst containing metallic palladium and at least one iodine-containing substance selected from the group consisting of iodine, iodic acid, iodates, for example, alkali metal iodates and substituted and unsubstituted ammonium iodate, and iodides, for example, hydrogen iodide, alkali metal iodide and substituted and unsubstituted ammonium iodides, the ratio in gram-atom, of iodine to palladium in the above-mentioned catalyst being 0.1 to 1.5:1.

Biphenyl or nucleus-substituted biphenyl can be prepared from benzene or nucleus-substituted benzene and oxygen or oxygen-containing gas in one step according to an equation ##SPC1## Wherein X is H, lower alkyl having 1 to 6 carbon atoms Cl, NO.sub.2, or lower alkoxy having 1 - 3 carbon atoms and Y is H or CH.sub.3, with excellent yield by heating the reactants in the presence, as a catalyst, of palladium or a palladium compound and sulfuric acid or sulfuric acid and a lower saturated fatty acid added to the reaction system and further in the presence or in the absence of an alkali metal salt.

Method for producing biphenyls

TERT-Butylstyrene is prepared by a one-step reaction of tert-butylbenzene, ethylene and oxygen in the presence of a catalyst prepared by treating metallic palladium or fatty acid salts thereof with pyridine. The yield is increased by using together therewith a promoter prepared by treating one or more metals or oxides or fatty acid salts thereof, the metals being selected from the group consisting of copper, nickel, manganese, uranium and thallium. The reaction is carried out at a temperature between 50.degree. to 300.degree.C under a pressure of up to 100 kg/cm.sup.2.
