The incoming beam is incident on the rotating multifaceted mirror's reflective surface, having an angle with respect to a virtual vertical surface that is vertical to the scanning surface and the outgoing beam's scanning direction. A light amount distribution for positions on the scanning surface in the scanning direction is corrected based on a slope of a straight line that expresses a ratio of light amount changes for positions on the scanning surface in the scanning direction when scanning the scanning surface using the outgoing beam.

An optical scanning device includes an enclosure having a plurality of windows covered with transparent members. The enclosure houses a plurality of light sources, a scanning portion, optical elements and a light amount attenuation portion. The scanning portion deflects each of a plurality of light beams emitted from a plurality of light sources at a constant angular speed in a main scanning direction. The optical elements constitute respective light paths from the scanning portion to the windows for the plurality of light beams, respectively. The light amount attenuation portion attenuates light amount in a light path of a first light source among the plurality of light sources in a downstream side of the position where a light beam emitted from a second light source enters as stray light. The drive portion drives the first light source so as to compensate for light amount attenuated by the light amount attenuation portion.

An optical box for an optical scanner includes an optical housing and a lid. The optical housing has an opening and a side wall surrounding the opening. The side wall includes inward recessed parts, each of which has a protrusion formed on its outer side. The protrusion can engage with the lid. The emission windows for emitting light beams are disposed on a housing of a laser exposure device having optical elements arranged inside for exposing a photoreceptor, and the upper surface of the housing is provided with a slidable shutter with openings. An image forming apparatus includes guide rails independent of the laser exposure device to movably guide predetermined cleaning brushes in the longitudinal direction of the emission windows. When the cleaning brushes are mounted on the guide rails and moved toward the inner side of the apparatus, the cleaning brushes touch a slant portion of a rib and the shutter is moved to the right to align the openings with the emission windows. While the cleaning brushes touch a longitudinally extending portion, the emission windows are exposed to enable the cleaning of the exposed window using the cleaning tool.
