A glass-substrate manufacturing method according to an aspect of the invention is a method for manufacturing glass substrates by employing a down-draw process. In down-draw processing, a molten glass is made to overflow from a forming member and formed into a sheet glass and the sheet glass is then cooled while being drawn in a downward-flow direction. In this glass-substrate manufacturing method, after the sheet glass has separated from the forming member and when the temperature of the sheet glass is within a temperature region ranging from a temperature higher than the softening point to a temperature near the annealing point, the sheet glass is cooled by maintaining the viscosity of side sections of the sheet glass within a range of 10-10poise while applying a tension toward the side sections.

Glass-substrate manufacturing method and glass-substrate manufacturing device

A method of manufacturing a glass sheet includes creating split flows of molten glass in a forming body () and causing the molten glass to flow down, subsequently merging the flows at a merging point to form a glass sheet G and causing the glass sheet to flow downward in the vertical direction. A plurality of chambers (, . . . ) separated by heat-insulating plates (, . . . ) in the direction of movement of the glass sheet G are provided. A heater (, . . . ) is provided for each of the chambers (, . . . ) so that the temperature decreases in the direction of movement. The heat-insulating plates (, . . . ) are disposed facing the glass sheet G, and facing surfaces of the heat-insulating plates (, . . . ) are shaped so as to correspond to a sheet thickness variation of the glass sheet G.

Method of manufacturing glass sheet

On molding a glass product by pressing a glass gob by the use of a mold composed of upper and lower dies each of which has a molding surface, a molten glass is supplied as the glass gob onto the molding surface of the lower die. Cooling is carried out for an upper surface of the glass gob supplied onto the molding surface of the lower die. After the cooling, heat radiation suppression is carried out to suppress heat radiation from the glass gob so that an inner part and an upper part of the glass gob are close in temperature to each other. Thereafter; the glass gob is pressed by the molding surfaces of the upper and the lower dies when the glass gob has a viscosity within a range between 10 and 10 poises (dPa&middot;s). Preferably, the heat radiation suppression is carried out by making a heat shielding member lower in temperature than the inner part of the glass gob approach the upper part of the glass gob in a non-contact state.
