An image recording apparatus records an image on a recording medium by causing a recording head having an arrangement of a plurality of recording elements to conduct its main scanning for the recording medium interrelatedly in the direction opposite to the arrangement of the recording elements. The apparatus comprises a setting device to set the number of main scannings by the recording head; a main scanning device to perform recording by plural numbers of main scannings with respect to one pixel by causing the recording head to conduct its main scannings for the same recording area of the recording medium in accordance with the number set by the setting device; and a sub-scanning device to cause the recording head and the recording medium to be sub-scanned interrelatedly per main scanning in an amount smaller than the width of the arrangement of the recording elements of the recording head. Hence, even if a disabled ejection occurs in one scanning at the time of recording by a multi-scanning, the missing dot is complemented by the following scan to make it possible to obtain an image having no image defects at all times.

In a normal record mode, a non-heat mode such that a non-ejecting pulse for heating is not supplied when the image recording is not executed is set. In a continuous magnify-record mode, a heat mode such that the non-ejecting pulse for heating is supplied when the image recording is not executed is set. Thus, a non-uniformity of an image density at the start and end of the recording can be suppressed and a reduction of the life of the head can be minimized.

An ink jet textile printing method forms an image on cloths in an image forming operation by repeating a step of applying ink on the cloths from an ink discharge port of a recording head, the recording head relatively main-scanning to form the image in a main scan direction, and a step of relatively conveying the cloths in a sub-scan direction. The method includes the steps of forming the image on the cloths by applying ink on the cloths from the recording head based on image data. The method further includes the step of temporarily stopping the image forming operation in accordance with an indication to effect a temporary halt of the image forming operation. When the temporary halt is indicated while the recording head performs a main scan in the image forming operation, the image forming operation by the main scan is completed, and then the temporary halt of the image forming operation is effected by moving the recording head to a standby position. When the release of the temporary halt is indicated, ink is discharged from the ink discharge port and then the image forming operation is restarted.

A recording apparatus includes a recording unit having a nozzle line comprising a plurality of nozzles arranged along a sub-scan direction for recording a band having a record width corresponding to a length of the nozzle line onto a recording medium in accordance with an input image signal by discharging ink from the nozzles along a main scan direction orthogonal to the sub-scan direction, a transport unit for intermittently transporting the recording medium in the sub-scan direction, and a control unit for controlling the drive of the recording unit and the transport unit. The control unit sets a transport distance of the recording medium by the transport unit to a distance smaller than the record width when the image to be recorded on the recording medium comprises a plurality of bands. Each of the bands has at least one end having an image pattern complement to an image pattern at an end of adjacent band along the sub-scan direction. The length of the end in the sub-scan direction is equal to a difference between the record width and the transport distance.

When a recording head having an arrangement of plural ejection portions for ejecting ink is moved for scanning, coefficients for the calculation of blur correction are set according to the number of nozzles used during scanning (magnification), and image signals corresponding to nozzles at scanning boundaries are corrected by an amount selected according to the set coefficients. This method makes it possible to always obtain a good image in which stripes formed at such boundaries are reduced even if image recording conditions are changed.
