A blood-treating system in which apparatus for the purification of blood by purifying the blood plasma. The system includes as principal elements, an apparatus for separating blood plasma by way of a membrane, an apparatus for purifying blood plasma and an apparatus for mixing blood with blood plasma to be placed between a blood-introducing portion and a purified blood-withdrawing portion of the system. This system can remove useless substances from blood with a high efficiency without damaging and reducing blood cell components or any fear of mixing of the fine powder in the purifying agent.

Leukocytes are separated from a leukocyte-containing suspension by bringing the leukocyte-containing suspension into contact with a leukocyte-separating material, whereby a substantial part of the leukocytes are entrapped in the leukocyte-separating material, and then, collecting the entrapped leukocytes. The leukocyte-separating material used comprises a fibrous material having a surface layer composed of a substance which is capable of being dissolved in water by degrees. Lymphocytes can also be separated in a manner similar to that mentioned above, from a lymphocyte-containing suspension having reduced contents of granulocytes and monocytes.

Separation of leukocytes or lymphocytes from leukocyte-containing

A container for the continuous centrifugal separation of platelets component in blood, having a first and a second closed chambers adaptable to be rotated around a rotation axis. Whole blood is continuously introduced into the first chamber. Platelet-rich plasma being obtained as supernatant in the first chamber being discharged through a first outlet port opened at a relatively short distance from the rotation axis and being then introduced into the second chamber. Precipitation in the first chamber being discharged through a second outlet port opened at a relatively long distance from the rotation axis. The consistency of the blood in the first chamber being monitored at a predetermined position which differs from the opened position of the first outlet port and being located between the opened positions of the first and second outlet ports with respect to the distance from the rotation axis. The quantity of the discharge flow through at least one of the first and second outlet ports being controlled so that the consistency of blood maintain a certain constant value. Supernatant in the second chamber is discharged through a third outlet port opened to the second chamber. Platelets component in a high purity content is obtained as precipitation in the second chamber.

Container, apparatus and method for separating platelets

Leukocytes are advantageously separated from blood or other leukocyte-containing suspensions by causing the leukocyte-containing suspensions to flow through a filter unit comprising a container provided with inlet and outlet conduit means and with a mass of fibers packed therein. The mass of fibers is characterized as possessing a bulk density of from 0.02 to 0.40 gram/cubic centimeter, and each of the fibers is characterized as having an average diameter of from 3 to 10 microns. The fibers to be used are selected from synthetic fibers, semi-synthetic fibers, regenerated fibers and natural proteinaceous fibers.

Separation of leukocytes from leukocyte-containing suspension by

Lymphocytes are advantageously separated from blood or other lymphocyte-containing suspensions by a method wherein the lymphocyte-containing suspension is flowed through a second filter having a mass of fibers exhibiting an average fiber diameter of greater than 10 microns but not greater than 60 microns, thereby to entrap a substantial part of granulocytes and monocytes in the mass of fibers and to obtain a granulocyte-poor and monocyte-poor lymphocyte-containing suspension; and then, the obtained suspension is flowed through a first filter having a mass of fibers exhibiting a bulk density of 0.04 to 0.40 g/cm.sup.3 and an average fiber diameter of 5 to 20 microns, said average fiber diameter being less than that of the second filter, thereby to entrap a substantial part of lymphocytes in the mass of fibers; and finally, the lymphocytes entrapped in the mass of fibers of the first filter is collected. Alternatively, another method is employed wherein the lymphocyte-containing suspension is flowed through the first filter thereby to entrap a substantial part of leukocyte components therein; and the leukocyte components entrapped in the first filter is collected to obtain a leukocyte component-rich suspension; and finally, the leukocyte component-rich suspension is flowed through the second filter thereby to entrap a substantial part of granulocytes and monocytes in the second filter and to obtain a lymphocyte-rich suspension.

An apparatus for treating ascites which is safe and superior in performance and does not cause hemolysis, by removing harmful bacteria or cancer cells contained in ascites, by filtration, concentrating useful proteins, etc. contained therein and returning the resulting concentrate to living body is provided. Said apparatus comprises an ascites-transporting means, a hemolysis-preventive means connected to said ascites-transporting means, a filter for removing bacteria and cancer cells, containing at least one membrane for filtering the ascites which has passed said hemolysis-preventive means, and a concentrating vessel containing at least one membrane for concentrating the ascites thus filtered.

Apparatus for treating ascites

A liquid treatment apparatus which can perform dialysis at a very high efficiency and which is suitable for dialysis of human blood is provided. The apparatus comprises a bundle of a vast plurality of semi-permeable hollow fibers substantially equal in length, which is gathered and bonded only at both end portions thereof. An inside liquid is permitted to flow the interior of the individual hollow fibers. This bundle of hollow fibers is loosely suspended in a vessel having a substantially U-shaped passage for an outside liquid, and the two gathered and bonded portions of the fiber bundle are connected to the vessel at two spaced-apart openings formed on the top face of the vessel. A dialyzate flowing outside the hollow fibers is introduced from an introduction opening formed in the bottom face of the vessel. In this apparatus, because the hollow fibers are suspended in the vessel loosely in an appropriately expanded state, the flow rate of the outside liquid flowing outside the hollow fibers can be increased while maintaining good contact with the suface of the fibers, and therefore, the treatment time can be drastically shortened. Especially good results are obtained when this apparatus is used as an artificial kidney for the cleaning of human bloods.
