An electrochromic element is provided that includes a first substrate and a second substrate that are arranged to oppose each other, a first transparent electrode that is formed on a surface of the first substrate facing the second substrate, a second transparent electrode that is formed on a surface of the second substrate facing the first substrate, and a coloration layer that is arranged between the first transparent electrode and the second transparent electrode. The coloration layer includes an electrochromic material and an electrolyte, and a pattern or a concentration gradient of the electrochromic material is formed in at least a part of the coloration layer.

The present invention provides a binarization device that realizes reproduction with a low error rate, even where optimum recording conditions such as recording power have not been set in the recording device, or where optimum recording has not been carried out for the reproducing device. The binarization device includes a binarization unit, a slice level setting unit, and a weight adding function. The binarization unit binarizes a reproduction signal obtained by reproducing information recorded by mark length recording on a recording medium to output high-level signals and low-level signals based on a slice level. The slice level setting unit calculates the average value of the high-level signals output from the binarization unit, and determines the slice level from the average value. In an optical recording method and apparatus for an optical storage medium, a recording pulse pattern having a sequence of multiple pulses is used to record one of plural kinds of marks with different lengths on the storage medium through a variable-linear-velocity recording process or a constant-angular-velocity recording process. Two or more discrete write powers are individually allocated to the respective pulses of the recording pulse pattern. Each of the write powers, allocated to the respective pulses of the recording pulse pattern, is linearly varied in proportion with a change of one of the recording linear velocity and a recording position of the storage medium. The resulting recording pulse pattern is supplied to a pickup, and the pickup emits a light beam to the storage medium in accordance with the recording pulse pattern having the linearly varied write powers allocated to the respective pulses, so that one of the plural kinds of marks is recorded on the storage medium.
