Described herein are systems, methods, and software to enhance user application preferences in a virtual computing environment. In one implementation, an application attach service is configured to identify a request to attach one or more applications to a virtual machine for an end user. In response to the request, the application attach service identifies the one or more required applications based on file type selections provided by the end user during previous virtual computing sessions, and initiates an attach process for the one or more applications to the virtual machine.

Application attachment based on user application preferences

Described herein are systems, methods, and software to enhance the management of different versions of an application for a computing environment. In one implementation, a computing environment may identify a request to update an application from a first version to a second version on a virtual machine. In response to the request, one or more storage volumes may be identified that are associated with the second version of the application, wherein the one or more additional storage volumes comprise one or more delta volumes Once the one or more storage volumes are identified, the computing environment may attach the one or more storage volumes to the virtual machine to make the second version of the application executable on the virtual machine.

Providing application versions via delta volumes

A method and system for migrating a plurality of physical desktop machines to a virtual desktop infrastructure is described. Physical machines are discovered on a computer network using at least one network search criteria using a tool module. User data is then gathered from the discovered physical machines. A virtual disk image file is created for each user of the discovered physical machines. The virtual disk image file contains user specific data collected from the discovered physical machines. A destination pool of virtual machines is selected and a virtual machine in the destination pool is configured for each of the users of the discovered physical machines. The configured virtual machines include an attached user data disk (UDD) backed by a corresponding virtual disk image file. A user can then remotely access their assigned configured virtual machines.

Mass migration of desktop deployments to virtual desktop infrastructures

An example method is provided to perform distributed power management for a distributed storage system accessible by a cluster in a virtualized computing environment. The method may comprise a first host from the cluster determining to initiate entry into a partial suspend mode and sending a request message to the cluster to take control of a storage controller of the first host. The method may comprise the first host receiving a response message from a second host from the cluster indicating availability to take control of the storage controller, and transferring control of the storage controller to allow the second host to control the storage controller via a network controller of the first host. The method may further comprise the first host entering into the partial suspend mode to suspend operations of one or more components while the storage controller remains controllable by the second host via the network controller.

Distributed power management with partial suspend mode for distributed storage systems

An example method is provided to perform centralized power management for a distributed storage system accessible by a cluster in a virtualized computing environment. The method may comprise a management entity identifying a first host from the cluster to enter into a partial suspend mode, and selecting a second host from the cluster to take control of a storage controller of the first host. The method may further comprise the management entity transferring control of the storage controller to the second host to allow the second host to control the storage controller via a network controller of the first host; and instructing the first host to enter into the partial suspend mode to suspend operations of one or more components of the first host while the storage controller is controllable by the second host via the network controller.
