Mixed mode constellation mapping to map a data block to a block of sub-carriers based on a configurable set of one or more constellation mapping schemes, and corresponding mixed mode least likelihood ratio (LLR) de-mapping based on the configurable set of one or more modulation schemes. The set may be configurable to include multiple modulation schemes to provide to a SEvSNR measure that is a non-weighted or weighted average of SEvSNR measures of the multiple modulation schemes. Mixed mode constellation mapping may be useful be configurable to control spectral efficiency versus SNR (SEvSNR) over a range of SNR with relatively fine SNR granularity, and may be configurable to control SEvSNR over a range of SNR at a fixed FEC code rate, which may include a highest available or highest permitted code rate.

A cable modem system for discovering interference groups (IGs) includes an infrastructure and a cable modem termination system (CMTS). The infrastructure is for transferring data. The CMTS is configured to initiate generation of test signals by a set of cable modems (CMs), obtain a set of test measurements for the set of CMs, discover interference groups (IGs) of the set of CMs based on the obtained set of test measurements and assign a plurality of upstream and downstream channels for the set of CMs that use orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) based on the discovered IGs.

Signaling method for interference group discovery in cable modems

A cable modem supporting full duplex (FDX) operations. The cable modem includes a transmit circuitry configured to process a transmit signal and a receive circuitry configured to process a receive signal. The receive circuitry includes a switchable analog filter configured to filter the receive signal. The switchable analog filter is configurable for different passband frequencies. The receive circuitry also includes a digital compensation filter configured to compensate a difference in frequency response in a specific frequency band due to switching of the switchable analog filter for a different passband frequency. The cable modem also includes an adjacent channel interference (ACI) cancellation filter and an adjacent leakage interference (ALI) cancellation filter. A digital compensation filter is also used in processing the ACI cancellation signal and the ALI cancellation signal to impose or compensate the difference in frequency response due to the switchable analog filter switching.

Cable modem and digital compensation for switchable analog filter to assist echo cancellation in full duplex cable modem

A method and apparatus for cancelling self-interference in a cable network implementing full duplex (FDX). A processor in a cable modem may obtain a frequency response of an echo channel for at least one sub-channel in an FDX band and calculate filter coefficients based on the frequency response, and an interference canceller cancels the self-interference in the downstream signal. The interference canceller includes filters in a digital domain to generate an interference cancellation signal from a reference signal. In another example, the processor may obtain frequency responses of an echo channel for all sub-channels in a FDX band, combine the frequency responses for the FDX band, and generate a channel impulse response for the FDX band from the combined frequency response. The interference canceller may then cancel the self-interference in the downstream signal in an analog domain based on the channel impulse response.

The erasure slicer threshold may be based on signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) or mean-squared-error (MSE). A symbol estimate may be identified for erasure when a coordinate of the corresponding soft decision is within an erasure area defined by the threshold. Symbol modification may include replacing a corresponding coordinate of the symbol estimate with a coordinate of a decision boundary associated with the erasure area.

A system and method are described to provide a next generation cable gateway/modem based on the DOCSIS standard with a scheme to synchronously combine channels in the physical layer to increase overall bit rates for coaxial cable data transmission. The systems and methods synchronize the counters associated with multiple channels, including continuity counters, at the transmitter to zero and then allow the counters on individual channels to increment individually. At the receiver, individual channel delays of individual channels will be thus recognizable based on the information provided by the counters associated with each channel. A buffer at the receiver is informed and used to individually delay one or more of the multiple channels to marry up continuity counter values. In this manner, the buffer acts to essentially equalize delays in individual channels with the continuity counter representing the mechanism for specifying the individual delays for the separate channels.

Physical layer channel synchronization method for high bit-rate cable transmissions

A timing skew estimation system is disclosed that includes a plurality of interleaved analog-to-digital converter circuits (ADCs), a timing mismatch estimation unit, and a correction unit. The timing mismatch estimation unit calculates a correlation between each of the plurality of ADCs. Then the timing mismatch estimation unit calculates a cost function for each of the plurality of ADCs, except the reference ADC. The timing mismatch estimation unit further calculates a gradient for each of the plurality of ADCs, except the reference ADC. The timing mismatch estimation unit also continually calculates the timing skew of each of the plurality of ADCs, except the reference ADC, as the sum of an immediately previous estimate of the timing skew of each ADC, except the reference ADC, and a product of a function of the gradient of each of the plurality of ADCs, except the reference ADC, and a step size, The correction unit continually corrects the output of each of the plurality of ADCs, except the reference ADC, based on the estimates of the timing skew of each of the plurality of ADCs, except the reference ADC. Eventually, the timing skew estimation system determines a converged estimate of the timing skew of each of the plurality of ADCs, except the reference ADC. A method of estimating timing skew and timing skew estimation circuitry are also disclosed.

System, method, and circuitry for blind timing mismatch estimation of interleaved analog-to-digital converters

One embodiment of the present invention includes a method for controlling a gain of a wideband signal. The method comprises adding a virtual channel to the wideband signal, the wideband signal comprising at least one channel. The method also comprises monitoring an output power associated with the wideband signal that includes the at least one channel and the virtual channel. The method further comprises setting a gain factor to achieve a predetermined output power of the wideband signal and amplifying the wideband signal based on the gain factor.
