An automotive data processing system includes a storage subsystem and a processor. The storage subsystem is disposed in a vehicle and is configured to store at least data produced by one or more data sources of the vehicle. The processor is installed in a vehicle and is configured to apply, to the data stored in the storage subsystem or that is en route to be stored in the storage subsystem, at least one model that identifies one or more specified features-of-interest in the data, so as to generate metadata that tags occurrences of the specified features-of-interest in the stored data, and to export at least part of the metadata to an external system that is external to the vehicle.

This disclosure describes a storage aggregator controller with metadata computation control. The storage aggregator controller communicates, via a host interface, over a computer network with one or more remote hosts, and also communicates, via a storage device interface, with a plurality of local storage devices, which are separate from the remote host(s) and which have respective non-volatile memories. The storage aggregator controller manages the local storage devices for storage or retrieval of media objects. The storage aggregator controller also governs a selective computation, at aggregator control circuitry or at a storage device controller of one or more of the storage devices, of metadata that defines content characteristics of the media objects that are retrieved from the plurality of storage devices or that are received from the one or more hosts over the computer network for storage in the plurality of storage devices.

Embodiments described herein provide improved methods and systems for generating metadata for media objects at a computational engine (such as an artificial intelligence engine) within the storage edge controller, and for storing and using such metadata, in data processing systems.

A controller, for use in a storage device of a data processing system, includes a host interface, a memory interface and one or more processors. The host interface is configured to communicate over a computer network with one or more remote hosts of a data processing system. The memory interface is configured to communicate locally with a non-volatile memory of the storage device. The one or more processors are configured to manage local storage or retrieval of media objects at the non-volatile memory, and to perform additional tasks that are not associated with management of storage or retrieval of the objects.

Performing computations during idle periods at the storage edge

A first solid state drive (SSD) includes a built-in network interface device configured to communicate via a network fabric, and a second SSD includes a built-in network interface device configured to communicate via the network fabric. A connection is opened between the first SSD and the second SSD over the network fabric, where the first SSD is further communicatively coupled to the second SSD further over an interconnect associated with a host computer. The first SSD encapsulates a non-volatile memory over fabric (NVMe-oF) command to transfer data between the first SSD and the second SSD in a capsule and sends the capsule to the second SSD over the connection. The second SSD executes the NVMe command to transfer the data between the first SSD and the second SSD over the connection according to an NVMe-oF communication protocol and without transferring any of the data to the host computer.

An automotive data storage system disposed in a vehicle includes a packet network and at least one centralized storage device. The packet network includes multiple electronic subsystems that are configured to generate data during operation of the vehicle, the electronic subsystems being deployed at different locations in the vehicle and being indirectly coupled to one another via network links and one or more network switches. The centralized storage device is installed in the vehicle and coupled to the packet network, and is configured to receive from the electronic subsystems write commands for storing the data, over the packet network, in accordance with a network storage protocol, and to store the data in the centralized storage device.

A solid-state drive configured to store persistent digitally encoded data may operate in an initiator mode. When operating in the initiator mode, the solid-state drive may initiate the generation and issuance of a command or a request for another solid-state drive to carry out a data storage related procedure. The command or request generated by the solid-state drive may be communicated directly to another solid-state drive without the communications passing through an intermediate device, such as a host processor.

Embodiments described herein provide a method for accessing a host memory through non-volatile memory over fabric bridging with direct target access. A first memory access command encapsulated in a first network packet is received at a memory interface unit and from a remote direct memory access (RDMA) interface and via a network fabric. The first memory access command is compliant with a first non-volatile memory interface protocol and the first network packet is compliant with a second non-volatile memory interface protocol. The first network packet is unwrapped to obtain the first memory access command. The first memory access command is stored in a work queue using address bits of the work queue as a pre-set index of the first memory access command. The first memory access command is sent from the work queue based on the pre-set index to activate a first target storage device.

Methods and systems for accessing host memory through non-volatile memory over fabric bridging with direct target access

A unitary solid state drive (SSD) assembly includes a non-volatile memory (NVM), and a processor communicatively coupled to the NVM. The processor is configured to implement a communication protocol configured for accessing solid state memories over a communication network. The unitary SSD assembly also includes a network interface device communicatively coupled to the processor, and network connector coupled to the network interface device. The network interface device is configured to communicate via a network fabric according to a network communication protocol. The NVM, the processor, and the network interface device are arranged in a unitary assembly.

Metadata computation apparatus includes a host interface, a storage interface and one or more processors. The host interface is configured to communicate over a computer network with one or more remote hosts. The storage interface is configured to communicate with one or more non-volatile memories of one or more storage devices. The processors are configured to manage local storage or retrieval of media objects in the non-volatile memories, to compute metadata for a plurality of media objects that are stored, or are en-route for storage, on the storage devices, wherein the media objects are of multiple media types, wherein the computed metadata tags a target feature in the media objects of at least two different media types among the multiple media types, and to store, in the non-volatile memories, the metadata tagging the target feature found in the at least two different media types, for use by the hosts.

A storage device, such as a solid-state drive, is configured to receive messages, such as non-volatile memory networking messages issued by a host processor or computer, that utilize NVM Express over Fabric (NVMe-oF) or NVMe/Transmission Control Protocol communication formatting for transmitting the command over a network fabric. The storage device is configured to terminate the NVMe-oF or NVMe/TCP formatted communication at the storage drive level. The storage device may further be configured to issued reply messages that include NVMe-oF or NVMe/TCP formatting for the communication formatting used to deliver the reply messages over a network fabric.

A first solid state drive (SSD) includes a first built-in network interface device configured to communicate via a network fabric, and a second SSD includes a second built-in network interface device configured to communicate via the network fabric. A connection is opened between the first SSD and the second SSD over the network fabric. Based on a non-volatile memory over fabric (NVMe-oF) communication protocol, an NVMe command to transfer data between the first SSD and the second SSD over the connection is encapsulated in a capsule. The capsule is sent from the first SSD to the second SSD over the connection via the network fabric. The second SSD executes the NVMe command in the capsule to transfer the data between the first SSD and the second SSD over the connection.
