A communication system (500) for transmitting and receiving radio frequency (RF) signals includes a base station (505) for transmitting an RF signal including at least compressed data and a plurality of correction factors, wherein the compressed data includes two-dimensional transformed image data which has been compressed by the base station (505) utilizing a plurality of orthogonal functions. The communication system (500) further includes a data communication receiver (510) coupled to the base station (505) for receiving the RF signal and for generating one-dimensional transformed image data therefrom by performing a one-dimensional transformation of the two-dimensional transformed image data utilizing the plurality of orthogonal functions. The data communication receiver (510) includes a controller (1025) for adding the plurality of correction factors to the one-dimensional transformed image data to generate a plurality of column signals which drive an active-addressed, rms-responding display (100).

Method and apparatus for receiving and processing compressed image data

A processing system (500) addresses an electronic display (100) comprising picture elements (pixels) (108) controlled by a plurality of first and second electrodes (106, 104). The plurality of first electrodes (106) are controlled by a plurality of periodic first drive signals (400) having a predetermined number of time slots independent of data being displayed. The plurality of second electrodes (104) are controlled by a plurality of second drive signals responsive of the data being displayed. The processing system (500) comprises calculating engine (610, 612) calculating from data being received the plurality of second drive signals for one of the plurality of second electrodes (104) for a time slot of the predetermined number of time slots. The calculating engine (610, 612) calculates one of the plurality of drive signals for the one of the plurality of second electrodes (104) as a function of the plurality of periodic first drive signals (400) for the time slot and a selected plurality of pixel values for pixels collectively controlled by the one of the plurality of second electrodes. The calculating engine (610, 612) represents the plurality of periodic first drive signals as a sequency-ordered Walsh-Hadamard transform (WHT) matrix (300) having a number of rows corresponding to the plurality of first electrodes (106) and a number of columns corresponding to the predetermined number of time slots (410-412). An identifier (510) identifies a plurality of hierarchical tree structures (Rows 1-8) corresponding to the WHT matrix (300) representation of the plurality of periodic first drive signals (400). An encoder (1504) encodes the data. A processor processes (510) the encoded data and the hierarchical tree structures (Rows 1-8) identified in the WHT matrix (300) for addressing of the pixels (108) of the electronic display (100).

Method and apparatus for driving electronic displays

A personal communication system (10) comprises transceiver stations (12, 14, 16, 18) providing communication capability between one or more portable radiotelephones (20, 22, 24) and a telephone network (30). One or more of the transceiver stations (12, 14, 16, 18) is further capable of storing a data base and of transmitting the same in response to a request for such transmission being received from a portable radiotelephone (20, 22, or 24) communicating therewith. The portable radiotelephone (20, 22, or 24) communicating therewith is capable thereafter of receiving the data base and of presenting at least a portion of the same to the radiotelephone subscriber.

Personal communication system providing supplemental information mode

A selective call signaling system (10) capable of facsimile communication with a selective call receiver (40) having an active addressing display (100) comprising picture elements (pixels) (108) controlled by a plurality of first and second electrodes (106, 104). A data compressor (12) compresses the data. A transmitter (30) transmits the compressed data organized in frames to the selective call receiver (40). The selective call receiver (40) comprises a receiver (60) receiving the compressed data; the active addressing display (100) displaying the compressed data. The active addressing display (200) comprises a controller (500) controlling the plurality first electrodes (106) by a plurality of periodic first drive signals (400) represented as a sequency ordered Walsh Hadamard transform (WHT) matrix (300) and the plurality of second electrodes (104) by a plurality of second drive signals responsive to the compressed data. A processor (510) calculates the plurality of second drive signals directly from the compressed data and identifies a plurality of hierarchical tree structures (FIG. 11 ) corresponding to the WHT matrix (300) for processing the frames of compressed data directly with hierarchical tree structures (FIG. 11).

Facsimile communication with an active addressing display device

A selective call communication system (10) has a scanner (14) for retrieving information from a source document (26). The source document (26) includes a region of interest (42) formatted in at least two format regions (50, 52, 54). The at least two format regions (50, 52, 54) include a first format region (50, 52) designated for a first type information, and a second format region (54) designated for a second type information. The scanner (14) further includes an encoder (708) for encoding and compressing the information; and a modem (710), coupled to the encoder (708), for transferring the information to a selective call terminal (28). The selective call terminal (28) has a receiver (202) for receiving the information; and a processor (20), coupled to the receiver (202), for processing the information. The processor (20) further comprises a first encoder (214) for encoding and compressing the first type information according to a first encoding and compression technique; and a second encoder (224) for encoding and compressing the second type information according to a second encoding and compression technique. A transmitter (30), coupled to the processor (20), transmits the information being processed to an at least one selective call receiver (40).

Method and apparatus for facsimile communication of first and second

A decoder for decoding a target image from a signal. The signal includes S facsimile encoded sub-image messages transmitted in a predetermined order. The decoder also stores a runlength code book. The decoder includes a facsimile decoder (910), a sub-image memory (920), a target image generator (940), and a target image memory (930). The facsimile decoder (910) is for generating S sub-images from the S facsimile encoded sub-image messages, using the runlength code book. Each of the S sub-images includes sub-image lines includes pixels. The sub-image memory (920) is for storing the S sub-images. The target image generator (940) is for re-assembling the target image from the S sub-images. The target image memory (930) is for storing the target image.

Method and apparatus for encoding a facsimile message

A selective call communication system (100) includes an encoder (508) for encoding and compressing the data to form compressed data, and a controller (22) for transferring the compressed data to a selective call terminal (28). The selective call terminal (28) includes a receiver (302) for receiving the compressed data. A region detector (308) for recovering the compressed data within a predefined information region (42) and a processor (20) for processing the compressed data. The processor (20) includes an identifier (310) for identifying white spaces in the compressed data and an eliminator (312) for eliminating the white spaces being identified. A transmitter (30) for transmitting the compressed data being processed to at least one selective call receiver (40).
