An apparatus and method for conveying contextually relevant information to a wireless client () is disclosed. More particularly, an emitter () transmits a diffuse infrared signal to a client () having an IrDA infrared communication interface (). Emitter () communicates with client () by making a link layer in emitter () compliant with an IrDA link layer running on client (). To perform communication, data is received at emitter () from a service provider (). The data is formatted into an IrDA compliant diffuse infrared signal and transmitted to client (). Client () receives the data and parses it to extract contextually relevant information contained therein.

Method and apparatus for infrared data communication

A method and system for conveying contextually relevant information to a wireless client are disclosed. More particularly, a transmitter transmits a diffuse infrared signal to a client having an IrDA compliant communication interface. The transmitter communicates with the client by making a link layer in the transmitter compliant with an IrDA link layer running on the client. To perform communication, data is received at the transmitter from a service provider. The data is formatted into an IrDA compliant diffuse infrared signal and transmitted to the client. The client receives the data and parses it to extract contextually relevant information contained therein. The client may reply to the transmitter if a user of the client is interested in a service offered by the service provider. If the service provider receives a reply from the client, the service is made available to client.

Method and system for infrared data communications

A system and method for determining the context of a wireless device is disclosed. An emitter () transmits an infrared signal to a wireless client (). Emitter () is placed at a known location and has a known coverage area associated therewith. The location and coverage area form a locational context for emitter () and a client () located within the coverage area. Emitter () receives data from a service provider (). The received data is relevant to the locational context of emitter (). Emitter () transmits the data to client () using a diffuse infrared signal (). Client () receives the signal and processes it such that only information of interest to a user of client () is displayed.

Method and apparatus for determining the context of a handheld device

A system and method for performing reliable unidirectional communication in a data network is disclosed. Unidirectional data is sent from a transmitting device to a receiving device. Prior to transmission, the data is divided into a window (401) comprised of data bytes. A checksum value (407) is computed across data bytes comprising window (401). Checksum value (407) is placed into an XML integrity element (404) that encapsulates window (401) in a manner allowing a receiving device to use the contents of integrity element (404) to validate the received window (401). Checksum value (407) is compared to a second check sum value computed across window (401) at the receiving device. If checksum value (407) matches the second checksum value, window (401) is validated.

Method and apparatus for reliable unidirectional communication in a data network

A system for performing interactive virtual reality sessions without constraining the mobility of a user is disclosed. The system allows a user to remain fully mobile while participating in an interactive virtual reality session. The system comprises a handheld computing device having a display, user input controls, a location sensing device and a user sensing device. To conduct a virtual reality session, a software application is loaded from a memory. Then, the computing device determines its position within a space using the location sensing device, and the user sensing device establishes a relationship between the user's eyes and display. This relationship is used to provide the user with the same perspective as would be achieved if viewing the simulated session in real life. User input controls allow the user to control aspects of the session to further enhance the user's experience.

Interactive virtual portal

A device enables a joystick to be connected to a PS/2&reg; port converts signals from the joystick to mouse-like signals so that neither the software nor the hardware needs to be changed in order to use the joystick instead of the mouse. The directional signals of the joystick are converted to mouse-equivalent signals and discrete signals from the joystick are translated by a device formed and configured to a PS/2&reg; port.
