A method and apparatus for document collaboration and management are disclosed. In the method and apparatus, a document may be incorporated in a document directory maintained by a document collaboration and management service. A portable representation underlay based on the document may be generated using one or more asynchronous workflows and the portable representation underlay may be provided in response to a user request.

In the method and apparatus, the execution of a first operation may be initiated based at least in part on receiving a service request from a user. A method and apparatus for forming a collection of documents is disclosed. In the method and apparatus, a plurality of documents are identified for inclusion in a document collection. The documents are identified based at least in part on one or more attributes of at least one document of the plurality of documents. A user is requested to confirm the document collection, and an instruction is received from the user indicating one or more documents of the plurality of documents may be included in the document collection. After the indication is received, the collection may be formed and made available to the user or one or more other users of a document management and collaboration system.

Forming a document collection in a document management and collaboration system

A method of synchronizing shared folders and files within a remote and local file system includes determining a remote and local file system state. The remote file system state includes remote hash values for remote instances of shared folders, shared sub-folders, shared files, shared sub-level files, and shared shortcuts. The local file system state includes a local hash values for local instances of shared folders, shared sub-folders, shared files, shared sub-level files, and shared shortcuts. The method also includes comparing the remote file system state and the local file system state to determine any differences in the hash values within the remote file system state and the local file system state and synchronizing any shared folder, shared sub-folder, or shared file having a differing value in the remote file system state and the local file system state across the local file system and the remote file system.

An example method includes receiving an input via a computing device indicative of a request to display a plurality of visual identifiers, each visual identifier corresponding to a different respective version of a document stored in at least one remote document management system. The method also includes receiving information from the document management system, determining a chronological sequence associated with displaying the plurality of visual identifiers; and generating a respective visual identifier representative of each version of the document. The method also includes displaying the visual identifiers on a display of the computing device according to the chronological sequence.

A predictive storage application selectively determines files from a computing system to send to a predictive storage service that makes the files available for use in another computing system. The predictive storage application may receive events indicating a use of files. The predictive storage application may determine that a file has enough importance and send it to a predictive storage service. Annotations can be received on the fixed-layout document. The annotations can then be mapped to the text-based document and downloaded to a user for viewing.
