An FPC holding mechanism of an actuator assembly of a hard disk drive (HDD) includes an FPC holder protruding from an arm-mold of the actuator assembly, and an FPC clip mounted to the FPC holder so as to be rotatable. The FPC holder defines a guide groove into which the FPC is inserted and a first side support plate facing one side surface of the FPC. The FPC clip includes a second side support plate juxtaposed with the first side support plate and facing the other side surface of the FPC, and at least two clip arms extending in a horizontal direction over upper and lower edges of the FPC, respectively. At least one of the clip arms has a hook hooked onto the first side support plate. The FPC holding mechanism thus prevents a portion of the FPC from moving in vertical and horizontal directions.

A method and an apparatus for improving performance of a hard disk drive at low temperature are provided. The method includes: measuring an internal temperature of the hard disk drive; checking whether a measured internal temperature is not more than a predetermined critical temperature; if the measured internal temperature is not more than the predetermined critical temperature, driving a motor of the hard disk drive for a predetermined time and proceeding to the operation of the measuring of the internal temperature of the hard disk drive; and if the measured internal temperature is greater than the predetermined critical temperature, determining that reading/writing operations with respect to the hard disk drive are available.

Method and apparatus for improving performance of hard disk drive at low temperature

A perpendicular magnetic recording medium including a soft magnetic underlayer. The perpendicular magnetic recording medium includes: a lower structural body including an anti-ferromagnetic layer; a first soft magnetic underlayer, a non-magnetic layer, and a second soft magnetic underlayer sequentially formed on the anti-ferromagnetic layer, where the thickness ratio of the second soft magnetic underlayer to that of the first soft magnetic underlayer is designed to be within specific range; and a recording layer formed on the second soft magnetic underlayer. Therefore, noise generated on the soft magnetic underlayer due to external magnetic fields of a magnetic head and a voice coil motor can be reduced greatly.

A head slider for a hard disk drive is disclosed. The slider includes an operation device associated with a read/write head and adapted to change the flying height between the read/write head and a disk in relation to temperature. The operation device may be formed from a material that expands and contracts in relation to temperature in order to change the flying height, or a material that undergoes bending deformation in relation to temperature in order to change the flying height.

The method includes depositing an aluminum layer on a base substrate; depositing a photo-resist on the aluminum layer; forming a pattern on the photo-resist using a lithography process; forming a fine pattern by forming a plurality of cavities on a portion of the aluminum layer which is exposed through the photo-resist; removing the photo-resist; forming a mold pattern; imprinting the mold pattern on a media substrate to form cavities on the media substrate; and filling the cavities with a recording material.

The particle extracting device includes a cover member of the hard disk drive; and an air guiding member disposed on a bottom surface of the cover member and facing a disk, so as to form a flowing path which guides an air flow generated by a rotation of the disk to an outer portion of the disk. In addition, the flowing path formed along an outer circumference of the air guiding member has an air inlet portion having a larger cross-section than a cross-section of an air outlet portion of the flowing path.

Provided is a hard disk drive (HDD) assembly. The HDD assembly includes: a HDD including a base member, a cover member, a spindle motor, a data storage disk, and an actuator; and a printed circuit board (PCB) disposed beside the HDD and operating the HDD. The HDD assembly can be mounted on an electronic device, for example, a mobile phone. In this case, the HDD assembly is mounted between a main PCB and a back cover of the mobile phone using a first damping pad interposed between the cover member and the main PCB and a second damping pad interposed between the base member and the back cover. The PCB for the HDD is disposed on the main PCB of the mobile phone to be placed beside the HDD.

A cover member including an air guiding portion and an HDD including the cover member are provided. The HDD includes: a housing including a base member and a cover member; a spindle motor installed on the base member; a data storage disk mounted on the spindle motor; and an actuator rotatably installed on the base member, and including a read/write head for recording data onto the disk or reproducing data recorded on the disk. The cover member includes an air guiding portion protruding from a bottom surface of the cover member toward a surface of a data storage disk to guide an air flow generated by a rotation of the disk to the outside of the disk, and the air guiding portion has a width that changes along a rotating direction of the disk. Therefore, the air flow generated by the rotation of the disk can be guided outside of the disk by the air guiding portion formed on the cover member, and the air flows fast, and thus, the particles on the disk can be discharged outside of the disk efficiently.

A spindle motor assembly includes a spindle motor having a shaft and a hub that rotates on the shaft, and a hard disk having a data storage medium mounted in the form of a whole disk, and a fastener attached to the center of a bottom surface of the disk-shaped data storage medium that faces the spindle motor. The fastener is a screw or a nut. In the case in which the fastener is a screw, a head of the screw is attached to the bottom surface of the hard disk, and the body of the screw is received in a screw hole in the upper portion of the shaft of the spindle motor. In the case in which the fastener is a nut, the nut is engaged with an external thread on an outer circumferential surface of the hub of the spindle motor.

A negative pressure air-bearing slider includes a body flying in a first direction along a track of a disc where information is recorded while being raised to a predetermined height, a plurality of rails provided at the bottom of the body corresponding to a surface of the disc, an air inflow channel arranged at the bottom of the body in the first direction and having an air inflow portion at the leading end portion of the slider and an air exhaust portion at the inside of the body, and a pair of negative pressure recess portions provided at the air exhaust portion of the air inflow channel to be arranged in a second direction perpendicular to the first direction with respect to the air inflow channel. Thus, a constant flying height is maintained in the overall area of a disc. A pitch angle is maintained within an appropriate range in the overall area of a disc. The size of the roll angle is minimized in the overall area of a disc and maintained to be constant. In particular, dynamic stability is provided to the external interference and track seek and the amount of contaminant particles intruding into the head-disc interface is minimized, so that a phenomenon in which the intruding contaminant particles are accumulated in the negative pressure recess portions can be effectively prevented.

An improved 10-pole 9-slot brushless DC motor used as a spindle motor used in devices, such as a computer hard disk driver or a laser scanner, is provided which reduces cogging torque and improves driving torque. The motor includes a field magnet having an annular permanent magnet which is formed of 10 magnetic poles attached to each other in a radial orientation, for generating a flux field and an armature formed by winding an armature core formed of nine slots and nine salient-poles with windings connected in three phases. Also, the field magnet of the motor is rotated by the rotating magnetic field generated by the armature windings. Since the motor has a short cycle and low cogging torque, the motor is very stable. Also, torque ripple is low and the torque characteristics as a whole are improved, thus achieving high efficiency.
