A device for variable polarization by an illumination device for illuminating organic tissue. The device includes a first set of one or more light emitting diodes (LEDs), a first polarizer arranged to polarize light emitted from the first set of LEDs in a first polarization direction, a second set of one or more LEDs, a second polarizer arranged to polarize light emitted from the second set of LEDs in a second polarization direction. A lens is arranged to collect light from organic tissue illuminated by the first and/or second sets of LEDs including a viewing polarizer arranged to polarize the light collected from the organic tissue in the second polarization direction. A signal generator is operable to signal one or more drivers for driving one of the first and second sets according a signal value and driving the other of the first and second sets according to an inverse value thereof.

The disclosure demonstrates a multipurpose illuminator used in medical examinations. The multipurpose illuminator described herein employs a housing incorporating two magnification viewing lenses each having different powered magnification that allows medical practitioners to view patient tissue and structures using two different magnifications. A battery power source is also contained in the housing to provide power to an illumination source. The illumination source may include an array of LEDs to provide light for viewing the patient tissue and matter. The illumination source and the lenses may be cross polarized relative to each other to provide enhanced viewing of the patient tissues and structures. A switch is provided to initiate the LED illumination source or to provide modes of operation that provide certain of the LEDs being illuminated.

An illumination device that has an orange light, with LEDs having a wavelength in the range of 580-620 nm, and/or a red light with LEDs having a wavelength of light in the range of 620-650 nm for side-transillumination of the veins. Orange light has been found to be beneficial for transillumination of superficial veins, while red light has been found to be beneficial for transillumination of deeper veins. In addition, the device has white light which is used for illumination of the surface of the skin. The illumination device contains a manual or automatic switch or switching mechanism that allows the user to easily switch between the orange light/red light and the white exam light by simply pressing a button or moving the device.

A transillumination device having a yellow-orange light source, with LEDs having a wavelength in the range of 585-595 nm, preferably 590 nm, an amber light source with LEDs having a wavelength of light in the range of approximately 600-610 nm, preferably 605 nm, and a lime green LEDs light source having a wavelength in the range of approximately 535-545 nm, preferably 540 nm. Yellow-orange LED light sources have been found to be beneficial for transillumination of superficial veins, amber light sources have been found to be beneficial for transillumination of deeper veins and lime green light sources have been found to be beneficial for transillumination of arteries.

Medical illuminator

An illumination device used in dermoscopy for enhanced imaging and illumination of the skin for medical examination and treatment. An array of LEDs encircle a magnifying lens assembly. One set of surrounding LEDs provides cross-polarized white light to aid in canceling the reflected light from the skin and creating less glare. Another set of surrounding LEDs provides non-polarized white light for traditional immersion fluid dermoscopy or for non-polarized viewing of the skin. A third set of surrounding LEDs provides polarized colored light, wherein the wavelength color is selected at a color wavelength that maximizes the viewing of skin pigment regions which is important for early detection of skin cancers and other skin diseases. In one embodiment, the colored LEDs comprise orange light at a wavelength in the range of 581 nm to 600 nm wavelengths.

The vein holder has an upright wall forming a central opening. The central opening is large enough to allow easy access by a needle. A bottom flange extends outwardly from the wall and rests against the patient's skin. It is the bottom surface of the flangewhich holds the skin tight to prevent movement of the vein relative to the skin. In addition, pressure applied by the vein holder closes the vein at an end away from the syringe opening.

Transillumination uses light to image tissues and organs, specifically the veins within the tissue. Strong ambient light hinders the imaging of veins and often, transillumination must be done in a dark or dim room. To enhance the capabilities of a transilluminator, a light shield is placed over the viewing area of the transilluminator so that turning off or dimming of ambient light is not necessary. For pediatric care, a frustroconical adapter attached to the bottom of the transilluminator. The adapter reduces the size of the viewing area.

The transillumination device has an orange light, in the range of 580-620 nm. Orange light has been found to be beneficial for superficial veins. Red light is used for deeper veins and darker skin. The transillumination device may have a single light source able to change colors. Two different light sources, each having a different color or different transillumination devices, each having a different color, may be used for diagnostic purposes.

The present invention is a hand held dermoscopy epiluminescense device with a magnification lens and an associated ring of luminous diodes powered by an on board battery. Every other diode in the ring operates as first and second light sources. The even diodes are filtered by a first polarization ring and the odd diodes are filtered by a second polarization ring. Each polarization ring has an open center for the lens and openings sized and positioned to correspond to the even or odd diodes to only filter one set. A viewing polarizer is provided and is cross-polarized relative to the first polarization ring and is parallel-polarized with the second polarization ring. A three way switch which provides on demand cross-polarized, parallel-polarized and a combination thereof for epiluminescence. A second embodiment provides even diodes of a first color and odd diodes of a second color. A third embodiment employs the alternating colored diodes of the second embodiment as well as the cross and parallel polarization of the light from the diodes as found in the first embodiment.

The present invention provides a hand held dermoscopy epiluminescense device having a generally circular optical magnification lens incorporated into the housing of the device. A lighting array provides the light necessary for medical examination of the skin. The lighting array comprises a ring of LEDs comprising four different colored sets of LEDs each on a different lighting circuit. The four colors comprise White, UV/Blue (405 nm), green/yellow (565 nm) and orange/red (630 nm). A second embodiment provides a hand held dermoscopy epiluminescense device with a magnification lens and an associated ring of luminous diodes powered by an on board battery. Dermoscopy epiluminescence device employing multiple color illumination sources

The present invention relates to an illuminated personal hygiene mirror for viewing facial skin or other areas of the body. In each of the embodiments of the present invention, a hand-held frame receives and supports a mirror. The mirror is covered with a polarizer for polarizing any reflected light falling thereon. A light source is positioned within the frame about the periphery of the mirror and is covered by a polarizing filter for polarizing light emitted therefrom. The mirror polarizer and light source polarizer are out of phase providing cross-polarized light to the eye of the user. An integral handle supports the frame and is held by the user when viewing facial skin. Other embodiments of the present invention include the same components, except a two-way mirror is employed and the mirror frame has a removable back portion to allow viewing by a second person. Other embodiments include an illuminated mirror employing cross and parallel polarization using two light sources. Other embodiments incorporate the use of a mirror filter which can rotate within the frame of the mirror to provide variable polarization to the user.
