A force-limiting device, especially for a seat belt system () in a vehicle, has a force transducer () interacting with webbing () for which a normal webbing path is provided. The force transducer () includes a webbing track () that in a non-force-limiting position extends in parallel to the normal webbing path and in a force-limiting position extends inclined relative to the normal webbing path so that the force transducer () in the force-limiting position sets a predetermined extension force (F) required to move the webbing () vis-&#xe0;-vis the force transducer () in a direction of belt extension (R).

Force-limiting device and seat belt system

A belt retractor () includes a frame () provided with locking teeth (). A belt reel () is rotatably supported in the frame () and provided on at least one axial end with ratchet teeth () adapted to engage in the locking teeth (), when the belt reel () is shifted from a home position into a locked position. A locking bearing () interacts with the belt reel () on the side where the ratchet teeth () are arranged and keeps the belt reel in the home position up to a first load threshold. A load bearing () interacts with the belt reel on the opposite side and keeps the latter in the home position up to a second load threshold. The first load threshold is lower than the second load threshold.

A belt retractor including a force limiter comprises a belt reel which is rotatably supported in a frame as well as a blocking unit counteracting a rotation of the belt reel and a force limiter between the belt reel and the blocking unit which permits a limited torsion of the belt reel against the blocking unit under load. The force limiter includes a damping element consisting of a cross-linked polymer which is sheared under load.
