A packer deployed well wall monitoring or transceiver assembly. The assembly may be particularly suited for use with swellable packers wherein the sensor or transceiver is delivered in a manner that substantially avoids damage thereto. Furthermore, the pre-deployment configuration of the assembly may enhance the deployment and reliability of the sensor in terms of formation monitoring over time. The deployment of the packer provides the energy required for the sensor or transceiver to contact the well wall. The packer elastomeric material provides or can be enhanced to provide isolation of the sensor or transceivers from extraneous borehole disturbances improving their signal to noise characteristics.

Disclosed herein is a swellable packer having a support element. A portion of the support element is substantially adjacent to the base tubular. Another portion of the support element is separated from the base tubular and a portion of the area between the support element and the base tubular is filled with the swellable material. Also disclosed herein is a sealing system including a packer as described above and a method for sealing within a wellbore using a packer as describe above.

A swellable packer including a tubular member and a swellable element. The tubular member is disposable on a mandrel configured to be deployed into a wellbore. The swellable element is disposed around the tubular member, and has segments of different cross link densities, with the segments configured to provide a varying cross link density in the swellable element along a thickness of the swellable element, an azimuth of the swellable element, or both.

A method for treating a subterranean formation penetrated by a wellbore comprising combining a carrier fluid, a first amount of particulates, and a second amount of particulates into a slurry, wherein the first amount of particulates have a first average size distribution and the second amount of particulates have a second average size distribution, wherein at least one of the first amount of particulates and the second amount of particulates comprise an expanding material, placing the slurry in the wellbore, and lowering a screen into the slurry.

A swellable packer device upon exposure to brine in a well. The device may be swellable to a substantially constant profile in spite of significant fluctuations in brine concentrations. Thus, the likelihood of packer failure due to under-swelling or over-swelling is reduced. Indeed, the packer may be employed for long-term operations or isolations ranging from a couple of weeks to twenty years or more without undue concern over packer failure from under or over swelling.

A passive liquid flow monitoring system includes a monitoring device made of a liquid-soluble material in which coded transponders are releasably retained. The monitoring device may be deployed proximate a region of interest in a hydrocarbon-producing well. An apparatus includes a base pipe and a fluid control material. The base pipe includes openings, and the fluid control material is mounted to the pipe to control fluid communication through the openings of the pipe. The fluid control material has a permeability that may be changed to selectively control the communication of well fluid through the openings.

Method and apparatus for controlling elastomer swelling in downhole applications

An apparatus includes a casing and a sealing element that is retained in the casing. The sealing element has an unset state in which the sealing element has a first radial thickness and a set state in which the sealing element has a second radial thickness that is greater than the first radial thickness to form a seal between the casing and an inner tubular member.
