Various methods are provided to produce welded structures resistant to hydrogen induced cracking (HIC), improve wear resistance, reduce manufacturing steps including pre/post weld treatments, and improving corrosion resistance. Exemplary methods include using exothermic reactive powder mixtures on as-welded hot surface(s) during weld cooling which generate rapid exothermic reaction melting and hydrogen removal which results in reduction of hydrogen, creation of a wear/corrosion prevention or reduction layer, and a reduction of residual stresses effect in the weld initially formed in initial welding. Alternative embodiments can also employ post cooling re-heating and application of one or more alternative methods using exothermic reactive powders.

Methods for modifying surface properties using exothermic reactive powder mixtures

Apparatuses and methods of manufacturing of thermally formed composite structures, such as a projectile firing structure, are provided. One simplified exemplary method includes: determining material properties of a projectile firing structure comprising a rifled barrel including thermal conductivity, wear, and tensile strength; wrapping a plurality of thermally reactive layers onto a cylindrical press form structure, the cylindrical press form structure comprising a plurality of spiraled grooves and lands, the thermally reactive layers comprising metal or metal oxides that when heated produce thermal diffusion byproducts in a composite structure forming the rifled barrel having the plurality of material properties; disposing an enclosing structure around the thermally reactive layers wrapped around the cylindrical press form structure; and heating the plurality of thermally reactive layers at a temperature and time so that the plurality of thermally reactive layers thermally react via thermal diffusion forming the rifled barrel having the plurality of material properties.

Methods for producing composite structures using diffusion or thermal reactions of a plurality of layers

Systems and methods for improving plasma propellant ablation/sublimation based systems are provided. One set of embodiments provides systems and methods for reducing carbon charring during plasma system (e.g., a plasma coating application system) propellant (e.g., a carbon-fluorine polymer) ablation and increasing heat transfer, ablation, and plasma thrust from plasma systems. In particular, one embodiment can include using a nano or micro-sized magnetic or electromagnetic field responsive material as particulates or microcapsules that are intermixed with polytetrafluoroethylene (e.g., Teflon&#xae;) nano-fibers, and using resulting fiber composites as the propellant material. Embodiments can include improved plasma system, e.g., pulsed plasma thrusters, plasma torches, plasma coating systems, etc, as well as nozzle improvements such as embodiments with magnetic structures disposed in relation to the nozzle. Alternative embodiments also include recovery and reuse systems.

Plasma propellant ablation/sublimation based systems

A method of modifying material properties of a fragmentation device, includes providing a fragmentation device with a first surface, a first section, a second section, a second surface spaced apart from the first surface, a third section, and a fourth section disposed between the first, second, and third sections. The method further includes positioning the fragmentation device within a carbon-rich environment, and absorbing carbon from the carbon-rich environment into the first and second surfaces of the fragmentation device. Additionally, the method further includes increasing a content of carbon at the first and second surfaces of 0.06 wt. % carbon to 1.0 wt. % carbon and maintaining an original content of carbon of 0.01 wt. % carbon to 0.05 wt. % carbon at the fourth section of the fragmentation device by controlling penetration of the carbon into the fourth section.

Fragmentation device with increased surface hardness and a method of producing the same

Apparatus and methods associated with an enclosure or structure including two sections that are adapted with a snap-fit interlocking structure. Various embodiments of the enclosure or structures are formed with various case hardening or embrittlement processes to increase embrittlement or hardness of the enclosure or structure so as to create a structure or enclosure which has a desired fragmentation capacity while still maintaining sufficient material properties to permit snap-fit insertion of one section into another section and withstand substantial impacts. Embodiments also provide an interlocking structure that minimizes differences in fragmentation or fracturing capacity as contrasted with other portions of the structure or enclosure. An embodiment of the invention includes an enclosure where one section of the enclosure or structure has a first thickness and the second section has a second thickness, wherein the first and second thicknesses are different. In some embodiments, one section is thinner than another section.

Snap fit assembly for a ruggedized multi-section structure with selective embrittlement or case hardening

A fragmentation structure is provided with improved performance e.g., fragmentation, projectile generation, storage, and manufacturing. An embodiment can include an open fragmentation structure that can be separated into individual components that can include a structure body section with a compartment, a removable initiator or detonator, a top cap section having an aperture configured to accept the removable initiator or removable detonator, and an explosive. An exemplary explosive can be preassembled to fit within the structure without a need for pouring in an explosive. An exemplary structure or top cap of the structure can receive an embrittlement treatment increasing its fragmentation characteristics. An ability of the structure to be easily disassembled allows for safer storage and a longer shelf life. A design of an exemplary embodiment of the structure allows it to be used with a wide range of explosive materials in addition to many types of removable initiators or detonators.

The present invention relates application of conformal coatings made up of nano-fiber, nano-particle, and/or nano-capsule materials to be applied on electrical component parts in general and printed circuit boards (PCB) in particular. A conformal coating material, such as Parlyne, can be combined with nano-materials to produce desired results. Benefits of this invention include enhancement of conventional conformal coatings performance in terms of properties such as mechanical, electrical, magnetic and in particular to prevent or obstruct the growth of tin whiskers or any other manufacturing defect that can develop on the surface of a PCB.

Process to produce conformal nano-composite coating for mititgation of manufacturing defects using chemical vapor deposition and nano-structures

An invention for making productive uses of normally undesirable whiskers is provided. Embodiments of the invention include a variety of apparatuses and methods associated with forming and using whiskers as well as forming whisker compounds is disclosed. For example, whisker detection modules can be created which provide a whisker surveillance capability. The whisker detection modules can further be coupled with a whisker response system such as an alarm or insulating material dispersing system. Another aspect of the invention is providing a variety of environments or microenvironments with regard to a whisker forming structure to affect whisker creation such as maximizing whisker formation. Another example includes provision of a variety of embodiments for manufacturing compounds of whiskers of various metal and metal alloys, including structures and methods is provided. Whisker compounds produced using various embodiments of the invention can be used for various applications.

Whisker manufacturing, detection, response, and compound manufacturing apparatus and method

A method, structure, and/or material composition associated with overetching a structure or allow of interest to deplete magnesium content at and in a vicinity of grain boundaries which mitigates or prevents corrosion including, for example, intergranular corrosion (IGC) and/or intergranular stress corrosion cracking (IGSCC). Another aspect of the invention can include a process and material composition associated with providing a particular coating having a number of material properties. Additional steps, material composition(s), and/or exemplary structure(s) can also be provided which provides a nano coating over the depletion zone having a first coating in accordance with another embodiment of the invention.

Intergranular corrosion (IGC) and intergranular stress corrosion cracking (IGSCC) resistance improvement method for metallic alloys

A method and an apparatus for mitigating electrical failures caused by intrusive structures. Such structures can be tin whiskers forming on electrical circuits. In an illustrative embodiment, nano-capsules are filled with some type of insulative and adhesive fluid that is adapted to bind to and coat an intrusive structure, e.g., a whisker, making the whisker electrically inactive and thereby reducing the electrical faults that can be caused by the whisker. In another illustrative embodiment, randomly oriented nano-fibers having an elastic modulus higher than tin or any other whisker material is used to arrest a growth or movement of a whisker and further reduce a likelihood that a whisker can cause an electrical fault.

Structures and methods related to detection, sensing, and/or mitigating undesirable structures or intrusion events on structures

A support mechanism for use in releasably stowing a load on a vehicle. The support mechanism includes a flexible member extending from the vehicle, and an annular fitting member having a receiving end for receiving the flexible member. An inside surface of the fitting member is tapered at the receiving end so that an inside diameter of the fitting member decreases with distance from the receiving end. In addition, a method for selectively moving a load on a vehicle from a stowed position to a released position using a supporting mechanism including a flexible member extending from the vehicle. The method includes providing an annular fitting member for receiving the flexible member, supporting the load using the fitting member, and moving the fitting member further away from the vehicle so as to bring the load into the released position.
