Electrophoretic display modules including various types of backplane and edge seals for protecting electro-optic displays against environmental contaminants are described. In particular, the disclosed module designs allow for very narrow edge seals, i.e., less than 1 mm in thickness. In one type of seal, the electro-optic layer is sandwiched between a backplane and a protective sheet and a sealing material extends between the backplane and the protective sheet. In some instances, the protective sheet includes several layers of transparent materials to provide physical protection and reduce the ingress of water.

Electrophoretic display with low profile edge seal

A method for making electrophoretic displays layers including various thin films that are deposited directly onto a layer of microcapsules of electrophoretic media. In an embodiment, a thin film of a light-transmissive conductive material is deposited to create a clear front electrode for an electrophoretic display. In some embodiments, both a dielectric layer and a thin film of a light-transmissive conductive material will be deposited onto the microcapsules.

A multi-laver device and its method of manufacture are disclosed. The multi-layer device comprises a first electrode layer, a first repair layer, a functional layer, and a second electrode layer. The first repair layer comprises a conductive hydrogel film or conductive hydrogel beads, the conductive hydrogel film or the conductive hydrogel beads comprising conductive filler particles dispersed in a cross-linked polymer. The repair layer protects the multi-layer device from electrical short circuits. A multilayer device is also disclosed including a light-transmissive electrode layer comprising a porous mesh or porous spheres.

An image is formed on an architectural surface by applying to the surface, in order: a rear electrode layer; a light-transmissive front electrode layer; a photoconductive layer disposed between the front and rear electrode layers; and an electro-optic layer disposed between the front and rear electrode layers. A potential difference is applied between the front and rear electrode layers and the front electrode layer is imagewise exposed to radiation which causes a change in the conductivity of the photoconductive layer, thereby causing an imagewise change in the optical state of the electro-optic layer. Films for application to architectural surfaces are also provided.

An electro-optic device, and its method of manufacturing, is disclosed comprises a first substrate layer, a conductive film comprising a first adhesive layer and a first electrode layer, an electro-optic material layer, and a second electrode layer. The first electrode layer, which is on contact with the electro-optic material layer, comprises a conductive material, such as conductive particles, a metallic material or a conductive polymer. The first adhesive layer has high storage modulus and does not exhibit plastic flow under the conditions of manufacturing, storage, and operation of the electro-optic device. The conductive film does not conform to the surface roughness of the first surface of the electro-optic material layer. The conductive film may be designed to be thin, flexible and transparent. The resulting electro-optic device exhibit excellent electro-optic performance even where the electro-optic material layer has imperfections in the form of gaps.
