A system for generating a user interface described herein can include a processor to detect a type of the system based on hardware components residing within the system or coupled to the system and determine a user interface manager to execute based on the type of the system. The processor can also execute the user interface manager to generate a user interface for the system, wherein the type of the user interface manager comprises a plurality of rules to indicate a layout of the user interface.

A technique is described herein for facilitating movement of graphical objects across display screens. In one manner of operation, the method includes: displaying a representation of a first movement as a user moves a graphical object across a source screen; detecting that the user has moved the graphical object into a graphical source portal associated with the source screen; associating the graphical object with two or more graphical destination portals provided by the plural display screens, in addition to the graphical source portal, such that the graphical object is accessible from the graphical source portal and any graphical destination portal; detecting that the user has removed the graphical object from a chosen graphical portal in a chosen screen; displaying the graphical object as having been removed from all graphical portals; and displaying a second movement as the user moves the graphical object across the chosen screen to a final destination.

Facilitating movement of graphical objects across separate screens

Functionality is described herein for performing at least one network connectivity task on a client device with the aid of one or more assistant devices. In some implementations, a client device (such as a smartphone, desktop personal computing device, etc.) relies on an assistant device to assist it in updating its programs, including its driver programs. In other implementations, a client device relies on an assistant device in establishing a network connection with a network-accessible entity. Functionality is also described herein for performing at least one program execution task on a client device with the aid of one or more assistant devices. For instance, the client device may rely on the assistant device to assist it in executing a driver program. The driver program, in turn, enables the client device to interact with a peripheral device or some other component.

Offloading network connectivity and execution tasks to an assistant device

Thumbnail images representative of recorded TV programs are generated and presented to aid a user in browsing the recorded TV programs. In one implementation, a temporary thumbnail image is generated when a TV program first starts recording. The temporary thumbnail is used to populate any user interface (UI) screens that reference the recoded TV program. Once the TV program has reached a threshold amount of recording (e.g., a prescribed duration of recording, or completion of the recording), a permanent thumbnail image is generated and associated with the TV program. The permanent thumbnail is then presented in any subsequent UI screens, replacing the temporary thumbnail. In another implementation, display of the thumbnail images in the UI screens may be further controlled by setting preferences, such as parental controls.

A media processing framework includes multiple media processing paths. At least one of the media processing paths includes a media processing pipeline which is in-process with respect to an application which interacts with the media processing pipeline. At least one other of the media processing paths includes a media processing pipeline which is out-of-process with respect to the application. The application can specify a custom plug-in presenter module to be set in either the in-process media processing pipeline or the out-of-process media processing pipeline. The application need not be 'aware' of the pipeline that is being used, whether the pipeline is in-process or out-of-process, or the security level that is applied to the media processing pipeline. Both the in-process and the out-of-process media processing pipelines can supply media information to a presentation processor, such as a compositing engine.
