Head-mounted display assemblies may include a first eyecup and a second eyecup that are configured for respectively positioning a first lens and a second lens in front of intended locations of a user's eyes when the head-mounted display assembly is donned. The first eyecup and the second eyecup may be movable relative to each other to adjust for an interpupillary distance of the user's eyes. A single near-eye display screen may be configured for displaying an image to the user through the first and second eyecups. An enclosure over the single near-eye display screen may include a first transparent component positioned between the first lens and the single near-eye display screen and a second transparent component positioned between the second lens and the single near-eye display screen. Various other methods, devices, systems, and assemblies are also disclosed.

Head-mounted display assemblies for interpupillary distance adjustments

An electronic display includes a display panel that operates in a single display mode to provide a single display, or a dual display mode to provide two displays separated by an inactive region. The electronic display includes the display panel and a panel driver. The display panel includes a left pixel region, a right pixel region, and a middle pixel region between the left and right pixel regions. In the single display mode of the electronic display, the panel driver provides first gate signals generated from first input data to the left, right, and middle pixel regions. In a dual display mode, the panel driver provides second gate signals generated from second input data to the left and right pixel regions. The first input data has a first resolution that is larger than a second resolution of the second input data.

Head-mounted display assemblies and related methods for interpupillary distance adjustments

Embodiments of the present disclosure support a head-mounted display (HMD) wirelessly coupled to a console. The HMD includes a positional tracking system, a beam controller and a transceiver. The positional tracking system tracks position of the HMD and generates positional information describing the tracked position of the HMD. The transceiver communicates with a console via a wireless channel, in accordance with communication instructions, the communication instructions causing the transceiver to communicate over one directional beam of a plurality of directional beams. The beam controller determines a change in the positional information. Based on the change to the positional information, the beam controller determines a directional beam of the plurality of directional beams. The beam controller further generates the communication instructions identifying the determined directional beam, and provides the communication instructions to the transceiver.

Positional tracking assisted beam forming in wireless virtual reality systems

A head mounted display (HMD) includes an electronic display, an optical element, and a light sensor. The electronic display is configured to generate a pixel pattern of display light and the optical element is disposed to pass the display light to a user of the HMD. The light sensor is disposed proximate to the optical element to generate light measurements in response to the pixel pattern. The light measurements are representative of a lateral position of the optical element with respect to the electronic display.

Automatic position determination of head mounted display optics

A method of automatic image alignment with head mounted display (HMD) optics includes generating a pixel pattern of display light on an electronic display of the HMD. A light sensor of the HMD then generates light measurements in response to the pixel pattern, where the light measurements are representative of a lateral position of an optical element of the HMD. The method also includes adjusting a rendering center of the electronic display for presentation of one or more images with respect to the optical element based on the light measurements.

Automatic image alignment with head mounted display optics

A display system may include 1) a plurality of electronic components, 2) an LCD screen that is heatable at a base heating rate by operation of the LCD screen and one or more of the plurality of electronic components, and 3) a heating subsystem for heating the LCD screen at an accelerated heating rate that is greater than the base heating rate to raise a temperature of the LCD screen above a threshold screen temperature. A head-mounted-display device may include 1) a display housing, 2) a plurality of electronic components disposed within the display housing, 3) an LCD screen disposed within the display housing, and 4) a heating subsystem for heating the LCD screen at an accelerated heating rate. Apparatuses, systems, and methods for heating a liquid crystal display screen

A display includes a display pixel array, a backlight emitter, and a lightguide. The backlight emitter provides illumination light. The lightguide receives the illumination light from the backlight emitter and distributes the illumination light to illuminate the display pixel array. The lightguide is configured to illuminate a viewing boundary of the display pixel array with an illumination gradient that fades from fully illuminated along a viewing portion to unilluminated along a non-viewing portion.

A method for dynamically illuminating each pixel row of a display device (e.g., an organic light emitting diode display device) for a given video frame is described. For every video frame, the method comprises enabling the driving of a first row of pixels of the display device for a first time period, where the first row of pixels emits light during the first time period. The method also includes enabling the driving of a second row of pixels of the display device for a second time period, where the second row of pixels emits light during the second time period, and the second time period is different (larger or smaller) from the first time period. The first and second time periods may be dynamically adjusted depending on the image to be displayed.

Example embodiments of disclosed configurations include a display device with a liquid crystal layer and an organic light emitting diode backlight. In one or more embodiments, the liquid crystal display includes a liquid crystal layer including a plurality of liquid crystals grouped into a plurality of liquid crystal portions, and the organic light emitting diode backlight coupled to the liquid crystal layer. The organic light emitting diode backlight includes a plurality of OLED backlight portions, where each OLED backlight portion faces a corresponding liquid crystal portion and is configured to project light towards the corresponding liquid crystal portion.
