A transmitter including a digital-to-analog converter (DAC) to generate an analog output corresponding to a transmitted signal. The transmitter further includes an analog-to-digital converter (ADC) coupled to the DAC. The ADC measures the analog output of the DAC to identify a set of digital samples. The ADC identifies, from the set of digital samples, a set of valid samples, wherein each valid sample has a voltage within a voltage range. The ADC extracts one or more signal properties from the set of valid samples.

Analog-to-digital converter to identify properties of transmitted signals

A rate Detection Apparatus (RDA) includes a power spectral density (PSD) estimator and a rate selector. The PSD estimator is configured to receive samples of a signal, and to estimate a PSD of the signal. The rate selector is configured to identify a transmission rate of the signal responsively to the estimated PSD.

A system for optimizing power allocation for each optical transmitter in an optical transmission system, the system comprises at least two intensity modulated optical transmitters, each of which is controlled by a modulator; an optical channel that can be spatially multiplexed by a multiplexer; and at least two optical detectors, for detecting the transmitted modulated signals. Method and system for providing seamless match point switching in an adaptive decoder (e.g., an MLSE decoder) that is based on estimation of symbol sequences, according to which statistics regarding samples corresponding to different symbol sequences in alternative match points are collected by a statistics collector, to create a set of figures of merit representing the quality of each alternative match point, while different match points are obtained by changing the delay of symbols decoded by the adaptive decoder and samples entering the statistics collector. A figure of merit of the current match point is compared to the figure of merit of alternative match points. Whenever an alternative match point figure of merit is better than the current match point by a predefined threshold, a decision to switch to the alternative match point is made. Seamless switching to the alternative match point is performed by shifting the sampling phase forward or backward, until obtaining better performance, while performing adaptation of the decoder to the sampling phase shift.

Seamless match point switching in MLSE-based modems

A method for estimating the phase of a modulated complex optical signal, according to which, the phase of the signal is isolated and the complex amplitude of the signal is digitized by a block of P samples. An adaptive filter minimizes phase-error between the phase of the received symbol and the phase of a sample, rotated by a phase correction factor, by iteratively performing a Block-Wise Phase LMS estimation on the samples using a step size parameter. During each iteration, the resulting correction factor consists of the sum of the estimated errors multiplied by this parameter, and the correction factor of previous iteration, which is updated, until obtaining the final correction factor from the last iteration. The samples constituting the received signal are recovered by adding the most updated correction factor to the phase of each sample and performing a decision regarding the phase of each sample.

Hardware efficient implementation of decision feedback phase estimation for an ultra high speed coherent receiver

System and method for compensating distortions introduced by an optical channel and by at least one directly modulated transmitting laser that transmits a modulated optical signal that carries data to a receiving end over the optical channel. At the receiving end, the transmitted signal is received by a coherent receiver that processes the received signal by compensating the distortions introduced by the optical channel by applying, on the received signal, an operator being capable of essentially compensating for all fiber distortions in the optical channel; compensating the non-linear phase distortions and/or statistical phase distortions introduced by the directly modulated transmitting laser by applying, on the processed signal obtained after compensating the fiber distortion, a non-linear operator being the extraction of the absolute value of the compensated signal; and extracting the data carried by the processed signal, from the absolute value of the processed signal obtained after compensating the non-linear phase distortions and/or statistical phase distortions, thereby demodulating the processed signal.
